It's been a while since first flight of unpainded 787 in Everett (IIRC since one of Ethiopian's frames in 2012). LN225 ZA477 A7-BCR for Qatar Airlines:

That Mexican government plane is a beauty to behold... which aircraft will be replaced by that B787?

ZA003 and ZB001 on the KBFI flightline. This beautiful 788 test frame, originally scheduled for delivery to Northwest Airlines, ended it's life, will be moved to museum in November.
ZB001 1st 789 test frame will be refurbished and delivered to Air New Zealand in August 2015.

It's pretty good comparison of 787 production program. ZA003, 3rd 788 test frame was written off due to big overweight and not economically viable re-work, then ZB001 isn't overweight and after few months of work will be delivered to original customer as frame at full technical specification.

Just how many parts do new planes need anyway? Enough to warrant parting a whole plane?

It's Air India. Don't try to think logical about their actions.

Modifications since 6 months (last flight 21st April 2014) when these modifications can be done in one-two weeks?

Probably the same "modifications" as on VT-ALH 777-200LR since 2012

Boeing and Virgin Atlantic Airways are celebrating the delivery of the airline's first 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline is the first European airline to take delivery of the 787-9 and plans to operate the airplane initially on its London Heathrow to Boston route. Virgin Atlantic's first 787-9 touched down at London's Gatwick Airport today following a more than 7,400 kilometer (4,000 nautical mile) nonstop flight from Paine Field in Everett, Wash. The airplane, named 'Birthday Girl' in reference to the UK carrier's 30th anniversary, is the first of 16 787-9s Virgin Atlantic has ordered from Boeing. "The first 787-9 in Europe will be a flagship for Virgin Atlantic's fleet, providing greatly improved efficiencies across its routes," said Todd Nelp, vice president of European Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The airplane, with its unique onboard features, will provide an unrivaled passenger experience, cementing Virgin Atlantic's reputation as a true innovator in air travel."

LN11 ZA841 for Korean Air should be rolled out next Monday, 20th October. And if you look at LN12 scheduled delivery date - 11/25/2015 it makes sense. 12 months for re-work and one for testing.

But LN22 issue is interesting. It was undergoing re-work outside for 3 months in late 2013 and is now undergoing re-work for 2 months. LN20-LN29 block has very different times of re-work. They need 8-13 months, depending how much they done and can do outside, but these frames need minimum 7-8 months of work inside the EMC.

re-work periods:
LN20 ZA175 JA821J July 2012 - September 2013
LN21 ZA176 JA823J August 2012 - July 2013
LN25 ZA230 VT-ANA April 2013 - December 2013
LN26 ZA213 VT-ANB March 2013 - Novemer 2013

And EMC inside now:
LN11 ZA841 (LN12 will should be moved in this Bay)
LN14 (since October 2013, but re-work was interrupted for over 2 months by 787 unfinished work case earlier this year). Delivery date - 3/16/2015, so it should be rolled in late January 2015
LN139 ZB021 789 for JAL - delivery date 4/27/2015, so roll out early March 2015. It's inside EMC since August 2014, so it will spend 6-7 months undergoing re-work.
LN273 ZA197 JA836J, but this frame should be out in no time.

And outside:
LN12 with delivery date 11/25/2015
LN22 8/6/2015
LN133 ZB002 ZK-NZD 7/1/2015 (should be moved inside in December at the latest if 6-7 months period based on ZB021 is true)

next frames which should be moved to EMC:
LN126 ZB001 ZK-NZC 8/3/2015 (so should be moved inside the EMC in February 2015 at the latest, probably after ZB021 roll out)
LN13 3/16/2016 (early February 2015 at the latest, probably after LN14 roll out)
LN17 4/4/2016 (late February)
LN19 8/3/2016 (early June, after ZB002 roll out)
LN15 10/31/2016 (July 2015 after ZB001)
LN18 11/23/2016 (October 2015 after LN22)

At this year end, EMC should look inside like this:
LN12
LN14
LN133
LN139
LN22
