On a slightly OT note, I heard that QR only wanted to purchase 788s while they waited for the 359 to enter service which would then be sold (or leased?), but these plans were scuppered thanks to countless delays in the 788 program so there was very little time in between 788 and 359 introduction. Is that true?

That's nonsense, their firm 787 and A350 order were both placed in 2007. If the 787 order would have been temporary they would not have ordered 30 + 30 options And that's not even taking into account their growth ambitions, they ordered both planes for their expansion plans.

9V-OJA Scoot 787-9 is doing pattern work at PAE for pilot training. Flying as Scooter 787.

My two flights on the 787 were in reasonably smooth air. I really wanted to see how the new turbulence control system worked - as a former controls engineer I am fascinated by the theory but wonder how it feels in actual implementation.

Now that China Southern has begun to put their 787s on international legs, it is unlikely that I will fly on one any time soon (because of routing, I use US carriers across the Pacific).

Furthermore, A359 and B788 are not equivalent. The A359 is 10-meters longer than the B788. Airbus has the A332 (and soon the A338) to compete with the B788.

Since Virgin Atlantic likes to have unique aircraft registration names (not in an alphabetical order), perhaps its next B787 should have either the following registrations:

- G-VAAH
- G-VGLM (shorthand for "GLAM")
- G-VCTE (shorthand for "CUTE")
- G-VBOY

9V-OJA Scoot 787-9 LN 240 - Operating as Scooter787 - Spent 7 hours doing pattern work at PAE today. They would do a missed approach, then a full stop landing, and then sit for 15-20 min. Repeat all over. They must have done this a dozen times.

Could it just be undergoing routine maintenance? It has been flying since September 2012

Most likely being scrapped for spare parts for other 787-8 in the fleet.
