It is called a RAT - Ram Air Turbine. It is almost always deployed and tested on a B1 flight

I believe it is included in the "terrible teens" . however I think all the negative comments about this group of aircraft is excessive. Yes, they are overweight, and yes they do need a lot of rework. However once Boeing is done with the rework they meet all of the certification standards of newer aircraft. I don't think they are maintenance nightmares as some believe.

LN7-LN19 block airframes have lower MTOW - 220t instead 228t that block LN20-LN29 introduced. They are overweight about 4t. So they have lower performance - shorter range and higher fuel burn for the same trip, probably about 2-3% more fuel.

But terrible is probably for something either too - Boeing lost a lot of cash on these frames, few hundred millions of USD per each frame.

Financially I agree, I am sure they cost Boeing a lot of money, especially since it takes almost a year to do the rework. I would love to see an actual fuel burn comparison on identical routes for ANA who have LNs 7, 8, & 9, as compared to later frames. Is it really 2 to 3 % higher on the shorter sectors that they operate them on?

IIRC
LN8 JA801A
LN9 JA804A
LN24 JA802A
LN31 JA805A
have Trent-1000 Package A engines, so engine performance affects results too. These frames should get Package C changes to engines during their overhaul.

Probably yes.

Bloomberg reports that Ethiopian Airlines is in advanced discussions to buy eight of the early-build 787s.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articl...ht-dreamliners

There are 13 still to be delivered

With Korea buying 1, LAN taking 2, Air Austral semi confirmed to take another 2 it will mean that Ethiopian will take the last available 8 if this turns out to be true. This would be a perfect solution for Boeing that will end all the speculations around these terrible teens.

If LAN will really take 2 frames (LN10 and LN16) then Ethiopian will buy even 2 test frames - LN4 and LN5.

LN11 ZA841 inside paint hangar in Victorville. It will get customer livery. Also, there is probably first photo of repainting Dreamliner, visible removal of paint:

Air Austral will take delivery of the 2 787s in May and October 2016.

That could mean that the LN22 will go back into storage from the EMC as this is almost a year later then the current expected delivery date of June 2015.

If Ethiopian orders the remaining 8 the whole schedule might again be shuffled anyway, with a customer it's also an extra incentive for Boeing to speed up the rework to get most of them delivered before the end of 2016. They could use the space on the surge line as it will become available as it's capacity is reduced now Boeing is speeding up the regular line in Everett and the Charleston line.

Expected delivery is August, but yes, LN22 should be back to storage, or they will store it after re-work (like few Air India's early builds).
I wonder which engines they will select. I bet GEnx-1B.
-------

Woodys Aeroimages, that frame which you signed "N804AN American Airlines Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner - cn 40622 / ln 288" is not by the way LN283 ET-ASH for Ethiopian or LN285 CN-RGC for RAM? White rudder and no WiFi bump suggest that it isn't American's 787.

After today, only 3 days left to make some deliveries, or Boeing will have another short month.
