United formalized the conversion of 10 787 orders to 10 777-300ER orders last week.

The cancelled 787-9 delivery slots have reportedly already been resold to Hainan Airlines.

Per my source, it looks like LN14 is scheduled to hang engines on 14 June, and LN22 is showing nothing, not even a planned job to hang them.

June 14th, so delivery in July at best.

Not surprising with LN22 - delivery is scheduled for May 2016, and customer (Air Austral) still doesn't choose engines type. I think they will re-work it but without cabin furnishing, put into storage and will finish job early next year.

Boeing has listed RR as the engines for the still unidentified order for Air Austral. The delivery date is just too far out for Boeing to hang the engines already. RR is also working hard enough to deliver the engines for the 787s that roll from line on time.

With LN14 it's going to be interesting to see, if the deal with Ethiopian leasing all these early teens goes through, how Boeing will book the deliveries. Boeing probably has set up a separate business entity that buys and owns planes, usually these are planes that are bought back from airlines as part of the deals for new orders. When these 787s are transferred to that entity they could be listed under Boeing as orders and deliveries. It's also possible that they will still list them under Ethiopian, even though Ethiopian will not actually buy them. Just like a sale and lease-back construction, but then without the sale in the 1st place. It's also very likely that Boeing will sell these planes + lease deal to 3rd parties. Not so much as an order for airplanes but more as an investment package. It's also possible that the company that buys such package will end up on the orders and deliveries page, possibly even as an unidentified customer.

I think United converted the 787 order to 10 777-300ER's with a very good reason: the airline is in dire need to replace the rapidly aging 747-400 fleet. With Boeing able to offer production slots quickly, United can start taking deliveries of the 777-300ER as early as next year, while it would take much longer for Boeing to deliver more 787's to United from an expanded order.

Indeed, that 747-400 replacement necessity is why I think United could end up with somewhere between 25 and 30 777-300ER's by 2018, which will replace all the 747-400's on transpacific routes from SFO and LAX.

Boeing will get better deal on 787-9 from Hainan too - early orders were made with very deep discounts, while Hainan will pay for these early 787-9 delivery slots more. It's good deal for both sides.

And by the way, the B77Ws can take in much more passengers than the 788 (if not having a similar capacity to the 789 as well). Maybe UA should continue ordering the 787 while, at the same time, get the 77W so that it can accelerate the retirement of the 744 and 772 fleet it has had for decades.

Neither are the batteries made by Boeing nor the engines by Airbus.

Because of the low fuel price you see a lot of airlines delaying the retirement of older aircraft.

Which is also the case with this new fleet plan for United. The gap in the fleet created by the cancelled 787s is filled with keeping 11 more 767s. The 777-300ERs are replacing the 777-200 that are now going domestic. This means both an up-gauge for the international fleet 772 -> 77W and the domestic fleet 763 -> 772.

The 747s are still only scheduled for retirement after 2018 when the A350-1000 deliveries will start.

~~~~~~~~
Today it also came out that AA will be deferring 4 787 deliveries from 2016 to 2017 & 2018.
