The conversion makes a lot of sense. I do not understand those airlines ordering both the 787-9 and the a350-900. They are very similar both in terms of capacity and range, it don't see the advantage of having both in the fleet. The 787-10 is more suitable for their medium-haul routes such as Vietnam-North Asia and Vietnam-Australia and the a350-900/787-9 for their long-haul routes.

A350-900 has almost the same size as B787-10. B787-9 is quite smaller.

After viewing the video several times The Sultanate of Oran has placed an order for one squadron of 787-9. These aircraft shall be used as fighter jets during times of War but shall be used to transport the Sultan's Harem during other times.

"Though we produce oil like water, we like that the 787-9 is fuel efficient. That leaves us more gas to sell and will allow us to buy more squadrons soon. Also, my wives say the mood lighting in the cabin sure puts them in the mood." said Abu bin Orani, His Gracious Highness, Supreme Sultan of Oran.

"The plastic airplane is next gen stealthy and the chevron engines are quieter than a Pharaoh's fart. We can target our foes before they wake up." said Gen. Kebira Koshkesh, Chief of all Armed Forces and Taverns.

I do know that. My point is that at least they have very different range, they are built for different purposes: the a350-900 is suited for long-haul/ultra long flights whereas 787-10 is for medium-haul.

Comparing the 787-9 and a350-900, the seatcount difference is not that significant and the range is not that different either. They are built to serve pretty much the same kinds of route.

That lead me to the conclusion that the first combination makes more sense especially in Asia-Pacific and Middle East where carriers use wide-bodies for medium haul flights.

Aeroflot has cancelled their entire 787 order.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articl...g-show-setback

They had 22 787-8s on order, the delivery of those had already been deferred several times, and it will be cancelled outright. Stating that they don't need the 787 in their fleet anymore.

What a shame. Thought Aeroflot colors would've looked good on the 787-8. When the time comes when Aeroflot needs them well Boeing will have sold the delivery slots. Could Boeing change those slots to 787-9s or 10s to speed up deliveries for those customers?

Is it possible this decision was politically driven? Ain't as though America & Russia are best of friends at the moment probably SU will switch to Airbus to fulfil their needs?!?

Economy and currency were probably the most significant reasons.
Russia has political relations with most of Western World on USSR level now...

But do they like the EU more? With German tanks in Poland?

I guess they will just have to fly old Tupelov designs. Or maybe the proposed Russian/Chinese widebody. It should be flying by 2030 or so

Aeroflot has no money to grab them. Plus Russian aviation market is quite weak now - many airlines are (i) either reducing frequencies or (ii) pulling out completely.

Here we go: Ethiopian order for 6 terrible teen confirmed:
Quote:
Order will boost long-haul growth for Africa's largest 787 operator

LE BOURGET, France, June 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines today announced an order for six 787-8 Dreamliner at the Paris Air Show. The order was previously attributed to an unidentified customer on Boeing's Orders and Deliveries website.

The Dreamliners complement the airline's existing 13 787s currently operating in the fleet and are part of Ethiopian's long-term strategy to increase capacity and provide greater route flexibility to and from its hub in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 Engines worth $500m to power Ethiopian Airlines
Wednesday, 17 June 2015

Ethiopian Airlines has decided to take Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines and long-term TotalCare® support worth $500m to power six Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.

The decision marks a significant vote of confidence in the Trent 1000, Ethiopian having previously selected engines from another provider to power 13 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Tewolde Gebremariam, Ethiopian Airlines, Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are pleased that the Trent 1000 will power this latest round of aircraft. We have confidence that it will deliver outstanding lifetime fuel burn, performance and reliability.”
http://www.rolls-royce.com/news/pres...-airlines.aspx

Ethiopian probably get very good price for engines and total care from RR due to earlier GEnx order. It's good PR for them, to get customer back from GE family user.
