This is only the beginning. A 767-300 featuring the new BB-8 character should be unveiled very soon for Japanese domestic flights starting in November 2015, and a new-delivery 777-300ER will get a Star Wars-themed livery for international flights between Japan and the USA starting March 2016.

"This is only the beginning...."

Without the big Star Wars ad on the side, one would not associate this paint design with R2D2. Perhaps this is the beginning of advertisements on plane bodies, we already have them on public buses. Airlines need the revenue.

Let's see how quickly they repaint this aircraft after the Star Wars 7 release date December 18, 2015. Who wants to guess the next ad?

Since the special livery does not refer to any specific Star Wars movie, it could be staying on the plane until after the ninth (and final) Star Wars movie is released--which could be seven to nine years from now.

When you factor in the attention these special schemes receive from the travellers, & general public I doubt this scheme would come off anytime soon.

I give it a life span of at least 7-8 years.

ANA is already flying it's Pokemon Jets since 1998, that could give you an idea on how long this could possibly last.

That also shows that it's not the start of advertisements on planes. EVA Air Hello Kitty Jets are also an example. JAL has had complete Disney planes, and still has several planes with smaller advertisements. Like this JAL 787 Studio Ghibli Jet.

In Europe you also got several leisure / LCC airlines with full body advertisements on their planes.

I was thinking down the same lines. The scheme would more than likely be removed during a heavy maintenance check that's why I predicted 7-8 years which usually would be the paint job life span.

It will stay around for at least 5 years, since ANA & Disney signed a 5 year sponsorship deal.

The 777-300ER won't be a new delivery. They are repainting JA789A, which was delivered Jun/2010. Looking at the ACT, there are no ANA 777's on the build sheet in the next 8 months.

If I remember correctly, ANA still has six 777-300ER's yet to be delivered. I thought one of those planes was getting the special livery. So when will JA789A be flown to the Boeing factory at Paine Field (PAE) or to the Southern California Logistics Airport at Victorville (VCV) for the repaint work?

They do have more on order, just none to be built or delivered before next summer.

Most likely be repainted by ANA. Boeing doesn't typically paint planes once delivered to the customer nor due they have the space in their schedule to paint it.

About LN29 ZA233 VT-AND - Air India's 2nd 788
Quote:
Air India readies 787 Dreamliner grounded for nine months

Posted by: Devesh Agarwal September 14, 2015 in Air India, Analysis & Features Be the first to comment

National carrier Air India is preparing its second Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner VT-AND for flight after grounding the aircraft in the maintenance hangars for over nine months. The aircraft is recorded to have last flown on new year’s day 2015. Bangalore Aviation has received these exclusive photos.

This is the second case of an Air India Dreamliner being grounded for over nine months. The last one was VT-ANI was grounded for what Air India termed a “reliability improvement retrofit (modification)” from April 2014 to being restored by January 2015. This is also the second case of a long grounding of a Dreamliner built at Boeing’s Charleston, South Carolina assembly line.

VT-AND was the very first airframe assembled at Charleston (see video of its assembly), and VT-ANI is also a Charleston “early build” airframe. - it isnt true. VT-AND was assembled and re-worked in Everett. VT-ANI is first 788 built in Charleston

The Charleston line began with assembly of the 787 and as with any new project it takes time for the equipment, the people, and production process to gel together. Within the industry, there is an opinion, that this is why, early build 787s from Charleston have been a source of trouble to their operators.
Nine months?

Grounding any Rs 800+ crore capital asset for nine months will cost any company a lot of money, and one feels for a financially beleaguered Air India to be hit not once but twice.

Can anyone with knowledge of the matter share was is so wrong with the aircraft that it takes nine months to repair it for reliability? And when one puts the words reliability, repair, nine months and airplane together, it sure raises a lot of questions.

Along with Air India, Hainan Airlines, China Southern Airlines, and Qatar Airways all received Charleston early build 787s. To the best of our knowledge no other airline has grounded its 787-8s for anywhere this long.

Air India’s new Chairman and Managing Director Ashwini Lohani is in the midst of a revised action plan to turn around the beleaguered national carrier. Can he address the torrid time the airline is having with its flagship aircraft?

I think two weeks ago I read Air India had to bribe their employee's to do their job. I guess that says it all how twisted that airline is from top to bottom.
