Qatar is taking a double delivery today, including their 25th 787. Their CEO Akbar Al-Baker even came to Everett to pick them up.

And Akbar Al-Baker spoke to the press about future 787 orders.

"Qatar has now taken 25 of 30 firm 787 orders. CEO Akbar Al-Baker says now looking at confirming another 30 options."
https://twitter.com/GlennFarleyK5/st...00733059854336

It's very possible that Qatar Airways will firm up their 30 options at the Dubai Airshow later this month. It's now also possible that they will convert these 787-8 options, or a part of the batch into firm order for the 787-9. At least that's what Akbar Al-Baker said they were considering if they would firm this order up.

They weren't too hasty with these 2 deliveries, they could have taken them 3 to 4 weeks earlier. But apparently this whole delivery event, with the CEO and the press was planned in advance, resulting in a somewhat late delivery. Boeing also release a new very positive market outlook for the middle east.

http://boeing.mediaroom.com/2015-11-...-Next-20-Years

It's a bit ironic of course as Qatar has complained very often about delays of the deliveries of the 787. But now they can turn it into a good press moment it's suddenly all good news, even with another small delivery delay as a result.

Anyway, they will take the last 5 of their current order in 1st half of 2016. It's going to be interesting to see what kind of delivery dates Qatar will get when they actually do firm up the remaining options. This follow-up order was already predicted to be firmed up some years ago. Will Boeing still have early, let's say 2017 delivery slots reserved for them, or will they have to go back to the end of the line and only take delivery of their 31st 787 very late in this decade. But then again, Boeing has booked firm orders this year for delivery slots in 2016 and 2017. Maybe Qatar will also be able to get some again available slots from the couple of cancellations that Boeing had to book this year.

It's always been just 787-8s. They even stated in the past that they wouldn't be interested in the 787-9 as it was in size to close in size to the A350-900.

Here's the original press release from Qatar Airways for the order of up to 60 787-8s.

I was going to question why would QR order 30 x B789's! Thanks for confirming as it doesn't make any sense to operate both just like VN with both B789's & A359's.

There are enough airlines with both the 787-9 and the A350-900 on order.

Air China
Air France - KLM
American Airlines
Etihad Airways
Japan Airlines
LATAM Airlines Group
Thai Airways
Vietnam Airlines

not yet confirmed
Ethiopian
Qatar Airways (if they firm up the options it will now be the 787-9)

There seem to be different type of missions for both types in the fleets of these airlines. Qatar for example has been using the 787-8s for shorter missions, they don't have a crew rest. The A350s will be used for longer range missions. They could use the 787-9 for shorter missions that need the extra capacity.

There should be some interesting announcements at the Dubai airshow. As for Qatar's 787s I have always wandered why they don't have crew rest areas.

Weekly order update:
http://www.boeing.com/commercial/#/orders-deliveries

1st batch of the El Al order:

3x 787-9

The remainder of the order will be firmed later when the deal is completely done.

But more interestingly, Boeing also updated the total order book, which they do every month.

And it turns out that Aeroflot, who publicly said several times that they were to cancel their order for 22 787-8s, now has converted this order to 18x 787-8 and 4x 787-9.

In other words, it's a complete reversal of a cancellation, it has become an upgrade. It makes me wonder if Boeing gave this upgrade to them after their earlier intentions to cancel, just to safe this order from being cancelled.
