ANA will get another one in a couple of days, followed by the 1st deliveries to JAL.

ZA117 (LN 40, JA806A) on March 21 for ANA
ZA177 (LN 23, JA822J) on March 29 for JAL
ZA179 (LN 33, JA825J) on March 29 for JAL

Well at least this is plan, it can still change.

edit:

Some more info on further deliveries this year:

"JAL is expected to be followed by Air India in May, Qatar Airways and Ethiopian Airlines in June, China Southern in July, LOT Polish Airlines in November, United Airlines in the second half of the year and LAN Airlines as new 787 customers and part of the 35 to 42 deliveries the company has planned in 2012."

A couple of major costumers have publicly expressed their interest in the stretched 787-10X variant that is now expected to be launched at the end of this year.

Quote:
Lufthansa, ALC vie to be 787-10X launch customer

Lufthansa and Air Lease Corp (ALC) are vying for launch customer status on Boeing's proposed stretched 787-10X.

Nico Buchholz, Lufthansa senior vice-president of corporate fleet, sees the aircraft as an ideal fit for the carrier as the airframe is not over-optimised to fly further than necessary for its route network.

The carrier has conducted extended evaluations of both the 280-seat 787-9 and 323-seat 787-10X to fill the approximately 200-to-300-seat fleet segment that is currently occupied by the Airbus A330-300, A340-300 and A340-600.

Boeing's newly-appointed senior vice-president of marketing, Mike Bair, says the 787-10X potentially provides a "absolutely astounding" improvement in performance, with 50% lower operating costs than the A340-600.

If Boeing moves ahead to "launch the airplane, we could be a definitive launch customer for the -10, in tandem with [ordering] some -9s. So that's in the oven," says Steven Udvar-Hazy, chief executive of ALC.

A Lufthansa order could be one of the bigger orders for the 787. It will be interesting to see how the orderbook will develop the next few years, especially with the backlog Boeing already has for this plane.

And more importantly right now.

Boeing Receives Certification for 787 Dreamliner With GE Engines

EVERETT, Wash., March 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) received an amended type certificate today from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the 787-8 Dreamliner equipped with General Electric GEnx engines.

"This is a great day for our customers and for our team who worked tirelessly to ensure the Dreamliner offers breakthrough fuel efficiency, unprecedented performance and new levels of comfort," said Larry Loftis, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "We are pleased to accept the FAA's confirmation of the safety and reliability of this airplane."

The amended type certificate from the FAA formally recognizes that the 787 with GE engines has demonstrated compliance with rigorous federal regulations. The achievement caps off the most robust flight and ground test program ever conducted in the company's history.

"This milestone completes the certification of the 787-8 airplane, and allows airlines to now operate the GE engine-powered 787 with both the baseline Block 4 engine and the PIP1 engine upgrade," said Mike Sinnett, vice president and chief project engineer for the 787 program. "It also represents the success of a remarkable partnership with the regulatory agencies around the world."

"This is the culmination of extraordinary work by teams from GE and Boeing," said Chuck Nugent, general manager of the GEnx engine program for General Electric. "GE Aviation is honored to power the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with its new GEnx-1B engine, and we look forward to seeing the aircraft-engine combination flying the skies around the world."

Initial type certification of the 787 with Rolls-Royce engines took place in August 2011. Each new combination of an airframe type and engine requires additional certification to validate the integrity of the design.

60 customers around the world have ordered more than 870 Dreamliners.

Boeing Press Release:

With this hurdle out if the way it means Boeing can start to deliver the 1st 787s to JAL at the end of the month.

JAL to receive first 787 this weekend, possibly two more next month

UPDATE: I have just got confirmation that both JA822J and JA825J will be formally delivered to Japan Airlines on Sunday, March 25. I still don't know if fly away will occur for both the next day or not and I'm still not sure if Boeing is delivering JA806A on the same day.

Japan Airlines is preparing to take ownership of its first and possibly second 787 this weekend. I'm still trying to find out but ZA177 (JA822J, L/N 23) and ZA179 (JA825J, L/N 33) are supposed to be delivered this month with at least one to be delivered this Sunday (March 25) and possibly both being delivered on the same day. Fly away is scheduled for Monday March 26th at 4PM local time. It does seem certain that both ZA177 and ZA179 will be delivered this month.

According to sources, JA806A (ZA117, L/N 40) for ANA is scheduled to be delivered on March 25th as well. It would be an unusual delivery day for Boeing with the company delivering 787s to two customers that are competitors. This is not yet final though and I am trying to confirm. This airplane should also be delivered in March nonetheless.

For April, Boeing is planning to deliver 3 more 787s also all to ANA and JAL. ANA is tentatively scheduled to receive ZA105 (JA808A, L/N 42) around April 17th. Boeing has pulled out two more 787s to the Everett flightline, JA826J (ZA180, L/N 37) and JA827J (ZA181, L/N 38). Both are tentatively scheduled to be delivered to Japan Airlines but the date is uncertain. Again all this is tentative.

One observation which is unsurprising is that most of these airplanes are late build 787s (L/N 33 and higher). Boeing is expecting to work on the early builds and deliver them from now until early 2014. Boeing's first delivery to Air India is also a late build airplane, VT-ANH (ZA236, L/N 35). This airplane was flown to San Antonio for unknown reason though I suspect it is to probably do some last minute work. This airplane should deliver in May. Going forward into the summer we should start seeing deliveries made to Qatar in addition ot AI, JAL and ANA. United will come later in the fall as will LAN, Ethiopian and China Southern.

Forthcoming deliveries

LN40 / ZA117 / JA806A (ANA #6) : Has made 2 check-flights in the last week. Delivery rumoured for March 21st although based on the number of check-flights earlier frames made, that looks perhaps optimistic.

LN23 / ZA177 / JA822J (JAL #1) : Has been making check-flights in the last week. Delivery possible in March subject to the GEnx certification coming through.

LN33 / ZA179 / JA825J (JAL #2) : Has been making check-flights in the last week. Delivery possible in March subject to the GEnx certification coming through.

LN42 / ZA105 / JA808A (ANA #7) : Now gone from the flightline, presumably for tail work. Has not flown. Delivery in April looks most likely.

LN35 / ZA236 / VT-ANH (AIC #1) : Now back at Boeing Field after returning from India. Delivery to AI apparently linked to contractural dispute and now rumoured for May

LN29 / ZA233 / VT-AND (AIC #2) : Currently in San Antonio undergoing rework to where it transferred at the beginning of August. Should transfer back to Everett in the next couple of months.

LN38 / ZA181 / JA???? (JAL #3) : Probably the next delivery for JAL after LN23 & LN33. Last seen rolliong into the EMC with engines attached in late December.

LN47 / ZA506 / JA809A (ANA #8) : Not visible on the flightline but should be next ANA delivery after Ln40 & Ln42

Moment that we all were waiting for:

Quote:
JAL becomes second airline to receive Dreamliners

March 27, 2012 - 10:47AM

Japan Airlines took delivery of its first two Boeing 787 Dreamliners yesterday, after a delay of about three years while the plane-maker wrestled with development and production problems.

The delivery to JAL brings the total number of Dreamliners delivered to seven. The planes also are the first 787s to be powered by General Electric engines rather than Rolls Royce.

The airline, which has 45 Dreamliners on order, postponed Dreamliner service on several routes while it waited out another delay this year resulting from a manufacturing glitch.

"We were sorry there was a slight delay, but relieved the aircraft is finally ready," said JAL President Yoshiharu Ueki at a ceremony marking the occasion. "And the delay's impact was that the carrier's service from Japan to Moscow, to Delhi, to Beijing was delayed one month."

JAL had expected to receive its first Dreamliner by the end of February.

The Dreamliner is the world's first commercial airplane with an airframe made largely of carbon composites, making it lighter than a traditional aluminum airframe. The 787 boasts unprecedented fuel-efficiency and has won more than 870 orders.

The 787 is about three years behind its original schedule because of problems with Boeing's complex global supply chain.

"We know we were a little late, and we apologise for that," Jim Albaugh, chief executive of Boeing's commercial airplanes division, said at the ceremony. "We hope you'll forgive us."

Boeing, the world's second-largest commercial plane-maker after EADS unit Airbus, made first delivery of a Dreamliner last year to All Nippon Airways and is ramping up the production rate to 10 per month, a target many experts believe to be unattainable.

In early February, Boeing reported signs of "delamination" on the rear fuselage of some 787s. Delamination occurs when stress causes layered composite materials to separate.

Boeing has said it will take 10 to 14 days per plane to repair the glitch. The problem has caused some experts again to question the production rate target. Boeing has stood by its goal, saying the new issue may affect deliveries in the first part of 2012, but not in the longer term.

The company recently increased the 787 production rate to 3.5 per month from 2.5. Boeing is boosting production rates on all of its commercial airplane programs to meet increased demand.

In October last year it was announced that China Eastern would change theirs and Shanghai Airlines 787-8 orders, 24 in total for 45 737NGs (not MAX). This change was firmed up in this weeks order update:
http://active.boeing.com/commercial/orders/index.cfm

original news article:
http://atwonline.com/aircraft-engine...eamliners-1017

If it was official late 2011, the total orders would have fallen below 800. But because of the big orders for Air France/KLM and JAL plus some smaller orders have been announced since the 1st announcement of the China Eastern conversion the number is now 851. But the total for this year has gone back in the negative, the 2012 Net Orders total is now -9.

Air New Zealand is also one of the smaller orders, in the most recent order update they firmed up 3 options for the 787-9.

I doubt that Boeing is sad about the conversion from 787 to 737, it's rumored the value remains the same. This just opens up some valuable places on the production line for other customers that have already waited long enough with all the delays.
