The operating profile has a huge impact on these calculations, so it is not practical to give a single answer.

The difference might be bigger comparing a 9 abreast 787-9 to a 9 abreast 777-200ER. The total cabin floor space is very comparable for these 2 types. The 787-9 will be a more interesting replacement for the 772 then the 787-10, especially when you also take the range into consideration.

Some order updates:

The Italian airline Neos who has ordered 3 787s through Aercap has changed their order from the 787-8 to the 787-9.

To make this happen Aercap (ILFC) has converted their last 787-8 orders into the 787-9 for this change. This means that there are no 787-8 on order with lessors. Except for the ALAFCO order, but that will never be delivered to them, especially as 787-8s. ALAFCO never mentions that order in their financial reports. It will either be transferred to another airline or converted into more 737 MAX.

Aercap (ILFC) now has a total of 74 orders, with 40 of those still outstanding. Only six of these 40 outstanding order don't have an engine selected, this means that all the other 34 have been placed. Could this mean that we will see another top-up order soon, maybe for the 787-10.


Another silent change on the 787 order book is a transfer of 1 787-8 for Privatair to ECAir of Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville). ECAir was supposed to get their 1st 787-8 already via Privatair, which was delivered to Privatair in September 2015. But that one is still in storage and listed as for sale.

Yes. These frames have to be stripped from old paint before being repainted into new colors. This process takes time, 2-3 weeks usually. If protective paint on wings and other parts is damaged, then they will have to re-paint these parts too.
