LN6 was in similar shape as LN5 and LN4 and she was re-worked and delivered to BBJ.
Money was key factor for sure, they probably can build cheaper new 787-8 frame in 2018 than re-working these 2 frames. Of course if these 2 frames had customers willing to pay more than re-work cost.

LN5 customer was Korean Air, but they switched to LN11 when Transaero cancelled 787 order.

I don't think there's much to be learnt by scrapping LN-4 and 5. I hope some aviation museum will be willing to take them.

LN4 will be used to test and certify the new RR Trent Ten engines for use on the 787. Still airworthy.

Boeing changed LN19's variable number from ZA151 to ZD012.
ZD010 and ZD011 bypassed.

So LN4 reclassified to not for commercial sale test aircraft and LN5 as you say Woody is for the knackers yard. I think that clears the tarmac apart from a teen or two which are reliant on EXIM financing.

LN4 may even take over from that 747SP still used to test GE engines...in time

She won't replace any 747 as test platform - they need 4 engines for initial certification due to safety reason (even if new test engine will fail there are 3 more running). She will be donated to museum or scrapped.

Even if RR o GE will upgrade their engines for 787 again, they will use current production frame to certify it.

LN13 ZD005 ET-ATJ delivery to Ethiopian was moved forward from September to end of August.

LN396 ZB368 G-ZBKG B789 for British Airways is now scheduled for delivery in late August.

LN446 ZB782 B-7835 B787-9 delivered to Hainan Airlines:

It's not just if the new engine fails, it's tested often enough just in flight, with the test engine shut down during take-off and landing. Twin engined can do a lot with just 1 engine, but they are not designed to regularly take off and land with 1 shut down.

To put the Ex-Im Bank into perspective, out of 2014 Boeing's orders only 14% were financed by this bank. That's large enough for Boeing to lobby hard for the future of this bank. But it's not large enough to turn it into a reason for everything that Boeing does right now.

Interstingly enough, Ethiopian Airlines are also taking early 787s. and they have said that they need the Ex-Im bank for financing. But even though this financing option is seriously restricted (max 10 million Dollar) they are still taking delivery of these oldest 787s, which are ironically called teens.

In fact, they sold&leaseback LN12. LN14 and LN13 are included in that deal too:
Quote:
AWAS delivers one 787 to Ethiopian Airlines

AWAS has delivered one new 787-8 to Ethiopian Airlines. As part of a fleet upgrade solution AWAS has agreed to purchase three new 787-8 passenger aircraft from the airline that Ethiopian had previously ordered directly from the manufacturer, and then lease them back to the airline. The transaction was jointly arranged by CA-CIB and DVB Bank, who also acted as lenders. CA-CIB is the Agent, DVB Bank is the Security Trustee.

Indeed, there are enough financing options, even for these 787s.

I didn't see this one before..

That's interesting, this makes United the 2nd airline to switch engines after Ethiopian. I wonder what made them choose the RR's over the GEs for the 787-10, it will probably have something to do with the A350 order. It's going to be even more interesting to see what they will take for any future 787-9 orders.

In other news, Hainan is taking a lot of 787-9s this year. Now it seems like not all of them will be operated by this airline, instead some will most likely go to their subsidiary's, like Lucky Air.

Quote:
China's Lucky Air eyes B787s for longhaul LCC ops in 4Q

Lucky Air (China) (8L, Dali City) will acquire an undisclosed number of B787-9s for use in opening up planned new longhaul routes to Europe and North America later this year.

The move was revealed in the Hainan Airlines (HU, Haikou) subsidiary's application to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for authority to begin 2x weekly flights from Kunming Changshui to each of Moscow and Los Angeles Int'l.
http://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/ne...-lcc-ops-in-4q

That would be yet another Chinese 787 operator and also another LCC 787 operator. I wonder how many more will follow.

Being able to sell them to Leasing Company means that these 787s have higher value than we expected. Of course, these are brand new frames if you measure cycles and flight hours.
Engines are probably Package-C. I wonder, did Ethiopian install overhead crew rest space?
