Qantas is set to add to its list of aviation firsts, with the national carrier confirming it will operate non-stop flights from Perth to London using the 787-9 Dreamliner.

The 14,498 kilometre service will be the first regular passenger service to directly link Australia with Europe when it begins in March 2018.

Seats on the Perth-London flights will go on sale in April 2017 for the first services in March 2018. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners used on the route will carry 236 passengers across Business, Premium Economy and Economy cabins.

– The 14,498km flight will take approximately 17 hours (slightly more or less depending on winds).
– When it launches, is expected to be the third-longest passenger flight in the world.
– Will be the longest Boeing Dreamliner flight in the world.
– The first regular passenger service from Australia to Europe

Definitely great for people living in Perth and want to go to London. For everybody else it doesn't make sense to fly through Perth (longer overall route). And how seamless is the domestic/international transfer? Its usually a pain in the ass in Australia as you have to collect luggage and check in again. Not sure how they are going to deal with that in Perth.

Optimal would be a hub in Darwin for direct Europe flights. That's on the direct (shortest) route to Europe. But then it would face the same problematic domestic/internal transfer issues. So better go straight over Asia or ME.

You are forgetting that the 787 ...with 500 examples now in service...is known as The Hub Buster.

If the connection is done well, the flight could be pretty competitive with the current Emirates offering MEL-LHR.

Well, currently there is a 15 minute bus ride between domestic and international for Qantas passengers. And as far as I know you have to collect your luggage in Perth and go through immigration (has that changed?).

Not sure how that is competitive compared to directly flying out from Melbourne (or any Australian city) and do the transfer in Asia or ME.

Qantas domestic and international flights will run out of T3/T4 when this flight starts. There will be no bus transfer required.

This is either LN17 or LN19. I bet LN19 as it's new booked order and delivery scheduled for mid 2017.

787 Dreamliner to become part of Air Tanzania fleet

787-8 is first ever wide-body order for 'The Wings of Kilimanjaro'

Boeing and the United Republic of Tanzania have confirmed an order for one 787-8 Dreamliner, valued at $224.6 million at list prices. The aircraft will be operated by Air Tanzania, the flag carrier of Tanzania.

Air Tanzania said, "The 787 Dreamliner will be the flagship aircraft as we renew and grow the Air Tanzania fleet. We aim to establish our long-haul capability by starting flights to Europe, Asia and the U.S.A over the coming years and the 787 is the perfect aircraft to achieve this ambition."

The 787 is a family of technologically advanced, super-efficient airplanes with new passenger-pleasing features. In addition to bringing big-jet ranges to midsize airplanes, the 787 will provide Air Tanzania with unmatched fuel efficiency and environmental performance, using 20 to 25 percent less fuel and with 20 to 25 percent fewer emissions than the airplanes it replaces.

"I am pleased to welcome Air Tanzania as the newest member of the Dreamliner family,” said Van Rex Gallard, Vice President, Latin America, Africa & Caribbean Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We are honored that Air Tanzania has chosen the 787 to operate its long-haul operations. The 787 will significantly increase passenger numbers feeding on to its domestic flights thereby boosting overall tourism to Tanzania."

Air Tanzania Company Limited is the flag carrier of Tanzania based in Dar es Salaam with its hub at Julius Nyerere International Airport and currently flies to destinations in Tanzania with a growing fleet of airplanes.

Should appear on next Boeing order book update, probably.

LN17 has flown and painted all white as it was supposed to go to Crystal Cruises.

LN19 is still inside 40-24 undergoing rework.

With a delivery in mid 2017 LN19 should also still be possible. But I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be LN17. Which is still allocated for Crystal Cruises. They were taking it only to sell it on to anyone interested. But I wouldn't be surprised if Boeing also kept on looking for a customer. If Air Tanzania takes LN17 they would just cancel the Crystal Cruise order without any penalties.

Wasn't LN19 also supposed to go to Crystal Cruises before they cancelled 1 of their 2 orders.

Anyway, there's no bad blood between Boeing and Crystal Cruises. Boeing tweeted about their VIP cruise 777-200LR last week. That one is a former Air Austral 777, which they sold and replaced with the 787-8 teens they ordered from Boeing. Interesting how all these transactions revolved around these early 787s.
