The 787 program keeps on being followed by bad luck.

Quote:
Boeing Dreamliner mishap prompts airport runway closure, flight delays

Debris from a brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner's engine fell onto the runway and into the grass at Charleston International Airport Saturday afternoon, sparking a fire, shutting down the airport and diverting flights for more than an hour.

“A 787 experienced an engine issue today while undergoing preflight runway testing in North Charleston,” Boeing SC spokeswoman Candy Eslinger said Saturday night.

The gravity of the mishap spurred an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, Eslinger added.

“After the investigation, we will determine what went wrong and come up with a remedy,” she said.

The unpainted 787 involved in the incident was the latest one built at the sprawling Boeing campus in North Charleston, Eslinger said. General Electric made the engine that was installed in the plane, she said.

This was the 2nd 787 that was built on the assembly line in Charleston and is destined for Air India. It has the General Electric GEnx engines and therefor has nothing to do with the recent engine problems on the RR powered ANA planes. Hopefully this new problem won't result in a bigger setback of the program. With several new GE powered 787s up for delivery to new airlines an engine problem would be very bad timing.

Is that a special livery for the United 787? I hope its not a new one for the whole airline... Honestly, to me, It seems as if a drunk drew that line.

And Qatar Airlines livery looks really great.

It should be delivered in September.

The deliveries this month, including the 1st 787s for Qatar, Ethiopian and LAN should take place in the 2nd half of the month according to the latest scheduled that was leaked onto the internet. On top of these 3 planes ANA should get 3 and JAL 1. Air India should also get 3 when the compensation deal finally gets through the bureaucratic jungle.

United projects excitement about delivery of 787s
Analyst says Boeing got it right with Dreamliner, but hasn't changed the game

Phil Rosenthal

August 1, 2012

..........Yet United early Tuesday projected an air of excitement about the first 787 painted in its colors rolling out of the Boeing hangar in Everett, Wash. It live-streamed the event to the strains of "Rhapsody in Blue." It also sought to stir conversation about it on Twitter and Facebook, undeterred by an incident over the weekend during a South Carolina high-speed 787 taxi test involving a General Electric engine, debris and a grass fire.

The airline has the new plane pegged for new nonstop routes such as Denver to Tokyo. The plane has big windows, a pressurization and air-circulation system that's supposed to be healthier and other features, but is it really all that and a bag of honey-roasted nuts? Is it a game-changer for either company?

"Look, it's impressive, but it's not going to change the industry," said Richard Aboulafia, an analyst with Teal Group. "No plane has. This is a story of gradual incremental progress. The mistake people make is … the tendency to overrate new technologies. In reality, society is a lot more incremental. Calling it a revolution is a massive overstatement.

"For Boeing, you get to launch one all-new jet a decade, you'd better get it right," Aboulafia said in an interview. "Is this a war winner? No. But they got it right, or they're gradually getting it right. For United, it's another thing that helps them run in place."...........

United has done nothing special with the 787 interior.

Its not anything new, but doesn't look half bad. I for one really like the look of the United/CO business seat (it'd be better in dark grey, but blue is fine) and is definitely the smartest 2-2-2 seat I have seen. And while economy doesn't look as crisp as Qatar (who's does though) at least the economy plus looks like the legroom is pretty ample.

Damn...9 abreast seating for the lose. I hoped every airline with the 787 would follow ANA's path with 8 abreast seating. Ain't nothing I can do about United's decision.

ANA and JAL seem to be the only airlines that are opting for the 8 abreast seating for now.

Like Air India who finally have the official approval by the Indian Cabinet to take delivery of the 787.

Quote:
Delivery of Boeing 787 Approved

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the proposal of Ministry of Civil Aviation as per following:

(i) Air India be allowed to take the delivery of 27 numbers of B-787 aircraft after signing the Delay Compensation Settlement Agreement.

(ii) The issue relating to compensation for failure to meet performance guarantees has been delinked from the Delay Compensation Settlement Agreement, which shall be negotiated separately by an Empowered Group of Officers after actual evaluation of the performance of the delivered/inducted B-787 aircraft. The Ministry of Law & Justice would examine and endorse the enabling legal provisions / aspects of the negotiations.

Air India would derive the benefits on account of the induction of the latest state-of-art technology Boeing aircraft which are more fuel efficient than its’ competitors.

Background:

Air India is planning to induct 27 numbers 787 aircrafts in its fleet as part of the contracted deliveries of the aircraft from M/s. Boeing. These aircrafts were scheduled to be delivered from September, 2008 to October 2011. However, due to certain design / production issues these aircraft have been delayed and are now scheduled to be delivered between June, 2012 to March, 2016.
http://pib.nic.in/newsite/erelease.aspx?relid=85697
But, yes there's a but...

Because of the engine mishap earlier this week (see the last post of the previous page) Air India has decided to wait until the cause is known before they will take the plane.

It should be noted that Boeing and JAL have not stopped flying the 787s with the GEnx engines, neither has any operator of the 747-8 that have the same engines.
