The 1st 11 787-8 that will delivered are from the order placed by Continental, just like the 14 787-9 the current United has on order. The original United order for 25 787-8 was supposed to be delivered from 2016.

767 vs 787 Cabin width comparison:

767: 15 ft 6 in / 4.72 m
787: 18 ft / 5.49 m

The 787 has a significantly bigger fuselage.

The only route that is already bookable is Denver - Tokyo Narita from March 31, 2013. But before that it should take over from the 777 on Houston - Lagos in October after it will 1st be used on domestic flights.

There will probably be more international flights that start earlier, then the Tokyo flight. Several cities have popped up every now and then, but only these 2 have been confirmed as destinations.

Ethiopian will receive their 1st 787 on August 14.

The released a press release with a misleading title.

Quote:
Ethiopian to Receive 3rd B787 Ever Manufactured

Ethiopian Airlines, the fastest growing airline in Africa, is pleased to announce that it will take delivery of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner on August 14, 2012, in Seattle, Washington.

Ethiopian is proud to be the first airline from Africa, Europe, Americas and Middle East to take delivery of the Dreamliner, and to be able to offer its passengers the ultimate travel experience on-board this game changing aircraft before other carriers.

"The fact that we are the first airline outside Japan to receive this ultra modern aircraft is an affirmation of our continuing pioneering role in African aviation. It is also a testimony of our commitment to give our passengers the best possible travel experience, with the best industry products and services." said Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian.

After taking delivery, Ethiopian will fly its Dreamliner to Washington D.C. the next day, where the aircraft will be on display. During the exhibition, Ethiopian Dreamliner is expected to be visited by US Senators and House Representatives as well as Ambassadors, Executives from the World Bank and IMF, members of the Ethiopian community, the media and other invited guests.

Ethiopian Dreamliner, the first to be received by a non-Japanese carrier, will make its historic trip to Africa and will touchdown at Bole Addis Ababa International Airport on August 16, 2012. The airline will hold celebrations in Addis Ababa for the arrival of the aircraft and will soon announce its first Dream destinations.
http://www.ethiopianairlines.com/en/...ve.aspx?id=325
Of course they won't be receiving the 3rd 787 that was manufactured, that the 3rd one is actually one of the prototypes that won't go to any airline. They probably mean that they will be the 3rd airline that will receive the 787, that could be true although Air India could still sneak in before them (see below). They will actually get production number LN49, and now I see it, that is the 3rd 787 manufactured for Ethiopian.

Airline Route.net reported about the start of the service.

Quote:
Ethiopian Airlines Revised Boeing 787 Operation as of 06AUG12

Addis Ababa – Guangzhou
Boeing 787 inaugural service remains on track on 16AUG12 as time this post goes to press

Addis Ababa – Johannesburg
Planned 787 operation further postponed till 26AUG12, instead of 17AUG12

Addis Ababa – Dubai
Boeing 787 service on ET600/601, starting 28OCT12, ADD departure Day 34, DXB departure Day 45, remains unchanged
http://airlineroute.net/2012/08/06/et-787-update4/
The 1st one will go into revenue service pretty much straight away on the Guangzhou route. I guess the other routes depend on the deliveries of the 2nd and the 3rd that would not take that long. One is now in the modification center and the other one was the last 787 that rolled of the assembly line and doesn't need rework.

As for Air India, they are waiting for the results of the investigation in the engine mishap. It's not expected that it will take too long, they could already take the 787 this week. Air India has already approached Boeing on the matter and is most likely already preparing the delivery.

But it's not the end of the legal issues between Boeing and Air India, since the airline will look into extra compensation because the 787s won't meet the weight and engine specifications. But they might change their mind when they see that the plane will perform better then expected.

It helps that ANA and JAL where the launch customers.

Anyway, Air India seems to be moving fast right now. The most recent news is that Air India is not waiting for the result of the enquiry into the engine mishap and will this week make preparations to take deliveries of the 1st plane.

There are 3 787s ready for delivery, according to this article Air India will be taking delivery of those 1 by 1 with a 7~10 day interval to allow the Indian delivery crew to come back to North Charleston where the planes are now parked.

It's going to be tight for which airline will be the 3rd one to take delivery, Air India or Ethiopian.

On the 14th of August the first 787 for Ethiopian Airlines will be delivered. It's first fly will be from IAD to ADD.

At the end of August it will begin services to JNB and to DXB in October.

Guangzhou 787 service by this airline has been cancelled and no new dates have been issued.

Air India and the Indian government have finally come to an agreement with Boeing and they are scheduled to receive their 3 787's in August.

That means two new airlines with 787 service in the current month.

On the bottom left corner you can see the 1st 787 for Hainan Airlines that came out of assembly.

It will be interesting to see how fast it goes between the assembly and the delivery for this 787.

This one is line number LN73, there won't be any new airlines that will see their 1st 787 go into assembly until LN90. For later numbers it's not yet known who will get the assembly slots.

ps. on the picture you also see the United 787 at the fuel dock, we might see it's first flight sooner then later.

LN73, does that mean there are at least 73 Boeing 787's built already?

The simple answer is yes.

But the assembly line in North Charleston is running a bit behind, not on the schedule but on the Line Numbers. They currently have the LN 60, LN 65, LN 72 & LN 76 under assembly.

This means that there are currently 70 787s already built

The 2nd 787 for LOT is LN 78 and went into assembly earlier this week after the Hainan 787 rolled out.

With 70 completed 787s and only 15 delivered this means that there are still 55 -/- 6 prototypes = 49 787s that are waiting at the Boeing factories for modification and/or delivery.

So it looks like they're building the airframes pretty quickly but other components like engines, interior, etc are what's delaying their deliveries?

No, not really. Although the engines do have some problems and engine improvement packages are on the way it's not the main issue that keep delaying the deliveries.

The post assembly modification process that is taking it's time has all kind of different jobs all over the plane. The changes that have to be done are much more structural then just waiting on an interior. One of the biggest issues is the weight reduction, the production evolved quite fast therefor many of the parts became lighter during the last 2 years of production. So the heavy parts are modified, as in have all the material cut out that is structurally possible, some parts are even completely replaced. It's all about making the planes up to specifications as much as possible.

The earliest frames had up to 6,000 jobs that still had to be done, the current 787s that come out assembly have just the normal jobs (about a couple of hundred) just like a 737 or 777 that comes out of assembly. This includes the painting, the all the preparations up to 1st flight and the last checks before delivery.

It all comes down to the decision that Boeing made to go ahead with the production before all the problems were fixed. This is now costing Boeing many man hours in the modification process that could have been used to speed up the production faster then it's done now. But as the delivery rate will see a clear increase from this month we should see the modification backlog decrease significantly over the next 6 months. It could already be down to under 40 at the start of September.

Ethiopian will send it's 1st 787 first at random on regular scheduled flights all over Africa and to Dubai, Mumbai, Rome, London and Frankfurt before starting it's scheduled routes when the 2nd 787 joins the fleet.
Quote:
Dreams Become Destinations Rotating Routes for 1st Ethiopian Dreamliner

Ethiopian Airlines, which will be the first airline in the world outside Japan to operate the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, is pleased to announce rotating destinations, primarily in Africa, for its 1 st Dreamliner.

The 1st Ethiopian Dreamliner will touch down in Addis Ababa at Bole International Airport on 17 August 2012. The first flight of Ethiopian Dreamliner dubbed “The Dream Tour,” will be on August 18, 2012, with a sightseeing flight to Mount Kilimanjaro for around 270 invited guests, consisting of Ministers, Ambassadors, other VIPs, Ethiopian ShebaMiles Gold Members and media.

Thereafter, starting from 19 August 2012, the 1 st Ethiopian Dreamliner will be operating on rotation basis to African destinations such as Kilimanjaro, Mombassa, Harare, Lusaka, Nairobi, Entebbe, Lagos, Johannesburg, Abuja, Malabo, Douala, Lomé, Accra, Maputo, Luanda as well as to Dubai, Mumbai, Rome, London and Frankfurt.

Passengers from and to the above destinations will enjoy the first and best possible on-board travel experience with Ethiopian Dreamliner. Our esteemed customers are encouraged to book with their local Ethiopian office or travel agency.

Mr. Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian, said, “Ethiopian Airlines is a truly indigenous African airline, which has been pioneering the African aviation for the last 67 years and it is only natural for us to deploy our first B787 in Africa. In affirmation of its commitment as Africa’s flagship carrier, we are naming our 1 st B787 Dreamliner as "Africa First".

Once the airline takes delivery of its 2 nd Dreamliner, the aircraft will operate on an assigned scheduled route, which will be announced in near future.
