Hopefully it will make it's 1st flight very soon so we can see it in full view.

In other news,

The 2nd 787 this month (14nd this year, 17nd in total) has been delivered to ANA, it's the LN07 JA803A. This was the 1st non prototype production 787 that needed the most rework. Even at the very end the delivery was postponed several times the last 2 months, so it's quite a relief for Boeing that it can fly to Tokyo tomorrow.

2 pictures of the JA803A.

The 2nd major cancellation for this year, Qantas have cancelled their order for 35 787-9s.
Quote:
Qantas cancels $US8.5bn 787-9 order after making $245m FY loss

QANTAS Airways, reporting its first annual loss in nearly two decades, has cancelled orders for 35 of Boeing's more fuel-efficient 787-9 aircraft in a bid to defer as much as possible of the $US8.5 billion ($8.1bn) list price.

However, Qantas played down its decision to cancel the orders, saying the savings justified the move.

The decision to cancel the Dreamliner orders will still see 15 787-8s delivered to Jetstar in the second half of next year, but it means an effective two-year delay in arrival of the bigger 787-9s. The airline has kept 50 Boeing 787-9 options and purchase rights and brought them forward by almost two years for delivery from 2016

The 787-8s are going to Jetstar Airways, they will replace their A330-200 that will go to Qantas. Because they didn't cancel their options Qantas will still take the 787-9 from 2016 instead of 2014. This makes it possible for Qantas to order them in smaller quantities depending on how the airline will perform.

Not good news for Boeing since they lost a firm order, but it does mean 35 production slots will become available from 2014. With the current backlog this isn't really a problem.

Also bad news for Qantas since this move was triggered by a huge operation loss at the international division. But good news as they will get some room financially and could return to profit before firming up their remaining 787-9 options.

~~~~~~~
Meanwhile on the delivery front.
LAN will take delivery of their 1st 787 on 08/31.
Qatar has delayed delivery until next month. There haven't been any big words from their CEO mr. Al Baker. So it's unknown what the reasons behind this are, it could be the ongoing investigation into the GEnx engine mishap.
Air India keeps on being a soap opera. Now the Ministry of Finance has completed the paperwork, Air India could take delivery of their 1st 787s right away. But now India's regulator DGCA is considering to ground GEnx powered 787s because of the engine problems. This would mean that Air India could not use the 787s straight away until the investigation is completed and has conclusion that it was a one-off manufacturing error. This would also effect JAL, since they use their GNex powered 787s to Delhi.
~~~~~~
On the routes front,

United has announced their initial international routes 787 routes

Quote:
The Chicago-based Star Alliance carrier will fly its 787s between Houston Intercontinental and Amsterdam daily from 4 December to 29 March 2013, Los Angeles and Tokyo daily from 3 January 2013, Houston and Lagos five-times per week from 7 January 2013, Houston and London daily from 4 February 2013 to 29 March 2013, and Los Angeles and Shanghai daily from 30 March 2013, according to an employee bulletin today. It operates all of the routes on other aircraft currently.

The airline will begin previously announced daily service between Denver and Tokyo on 31 March 2013.

Guess the other airlines that ordered the 787 can now move up the queue and get Qantas' planes sooner.

This blog usually has recent info on upcoming deliveries:
http://nyc787.blogspot.nl/

But because of all the planes that still need rework before they can be delivered, which impacts the delivery schedule of the most recent manufactured 787s that don't need rework it's hard make a reliable list for the deliveries over the next couple of months. There are still enough delays for individual 787s that take longer then expected to get ready for delivery.

For this month this was the schedule (the current prognosis).

L/N 58 - A7-BCB - 8/25/2012 - Qatar #1 (unclear)
L/N 69 - JA814A - 8/28/2012 - ANA #13 (probably September)
L/N 67 - JA813A - 8/30/2012 - ANA #14 (likely to be delivered this month)
L/N 70 - JA828J - 8/30/2012 - JAL #5 (probably September)
L/N 68 - CC-BBA - 8/31/2012 - LAN #1 (confirmed)

There's also still a possibility that Air India will also take delivery this month.

The delivery schedule for September was also known, they are all at the end of the month. We can't currently judge if these will actually be delivered next month , except for the 1st 787 for United that is pretty much confirmed.

L/N 71 - ET-AOR - 9/18/2012 - Ethiopian #2 (Awaiting first flight)
L/N 53 - N20904 - 9/18/2012 - United Airlines #1 (confirmed)
L/N 27 - JA824J - 9/20/2012 - JAL #6 (Awaiting first flight)
L/N 66 - JA815A - 9/25/2012 - ANA #15 (Awaiting first flight)
L/N 64 - A7-BCL - 9/27/2012 - Qatar #2 (Awaiting first flight)
L/N 43 - B-2727 - 9/27/2012 - China Southern #1 (Awaiting first flight)

There's nothing known for beyond September (except that LOT will take their 1st in November). But you can look in the production list on the blog above to see on which 787s Boeing is currently working on.

Boeing has started the assembly surge line to ramp up the production from the current 3.5 787s per month to 10 per month at the end of 2013.

The surge line will be the 3rd assembly line for the 787. The 1st line is in Everett (hall 40-26), the 2nd line is in Charleston, North Carolina. The surge line is also in Everett (hall 40-24), it was up to now in use for the early build 787 modification process. The surge line won't be a full line, it will have only 3 positions instead of 4 on the other lines. It will share the 4th position of the line with the main line. The production of a 787 on all lines will also go faster as more and more parts are being delivered to Boeing fully completed which means less work during the assembly.

The 1st 787 that will go into the surge line is LN80, ZA538, the 3rd one for LAN.

Surging ahead

The temporary surge line for the 787 is now up and running in our Everett factory. And today, I wanted to give you the first look inside.

As some of you know, this is a final assembly line designed to help the program steadily increase its production rate from the current 3.5 airplanes per month to 10 per month by the end of 2013, as well as help facilitate the introduction of the 787-9 into the production system next year.

The first airplane on the temporary surge line will begin final body join and then go through the remaining steps of the production process. But this line isn’t a mirror image of the original 787 production line. Instead of moving down the line in a nose-to-door configuration, airplanes will be staged in a slanted arrangement at Position 3. After completing interior installations, the airplane will move to Position 4 over on the original line. That’s because work in Position 4 can occur at a faster rate so we can accommodate airplanes from both the original line and the temporary surge line.

This is yet another major sign of progress allowing us to get more and more airplanes into the hands of our customers.

Interesting story about the production slots that became available after Qantas made their cancellation.

Quote:
Virgin Australia tried to grab Qantas' cancelled Boeing 787 order

Virgin Australia expects to order either the Boeing 787 Dreamliner or Airbus A350 within 12 months, as the airline’s fleet for post-2017 takes shape.

“The 787 and A350 are both in the mix” says Virgin Australia CEO John Borghetti. “They’re clearly the next generation of aircraft… it’s fair to say that sometime within the next 12 months we’d like to make a call.”

However, that decision could have come much sooner, with Borghetti revealing he was quick off the mark to contact Boeing last week when Qantas announced it was cancelling its order for 35 Dreamliners.

''As soon as we heard that [from Qantas], we did ring Boeing to see whether or not we could get our hands on some of them … but unfortunately, when we spoke to them those slots had been taken,'' he tells The Sydney Morning Herald. ''We were pretty quick but not quick enough, obviously."

read further:
http://www.ausbt.com.au/virgin-austr...eing-787-order
Boeing probably has a waiting list for cancelled slots like this, most likely from airlines that have already ordered the 787 and want to get them earlier.

After ANA, JAL and Ethiopian Airlines Chilian based LAN Airlines has become the 4th airliner to take delivery of the Boeing 787.

Quote:
Boeing Celebrates Delivery of LAN Airlines' first 787 Dreamliner

EVERETT, Wash., Aug. 31, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and LAN Airlines, one of Latin America's leading passenger and cargo carriers, celebrated the delivery of the first 787 Dreamliner to LAN making it the first airline in the Americas to receive the new airplane.

LAN is only the fourth customer in the world to include the Boeing 787 in its fleet with 32 of this new aircraft on order and lease.

LAN's top executives, Boeing representatives and authorities celebrated the delivery at an event at the Future of Flight Aviation Center in Mukilteo, Washington, near Boeing's 787 final assembly factory in Everett.

"We are delighted to receive this airplane. This is a landmark moment not just for LAN, but for all our passengers in Latin America and other countries the 787 will operate to/from," said Ignacio Cueto, CEO of LAN Airlines, stressing the importance of this delivery for LAN. "Thanks to this aircraft, we will be able to operate longer routes using a plane that is more environmentally-friendly and is highly efficient, which will ensure that LAN will be able to move forward through sustainable growth. Above all, the special features of the 787 will allow us to further improve the travel experience for our passengers."

The 787 Dreamliner is composed of light-weight composites and features numerous systems, engine and aerodynamic advancements making it more efficient to operate compared with its competition. It is the first mid-sized airplane capable of flying long-range routes, enabling airlines to open new, non-stop routes preferred by passengers.

"LAN has clearly become the leader in aviation in Latin America and across the globe due to its strong leadership, unrivaled customer service, and commitment to technology and innovation," said Van Rex Gallard, vice president of Sales for Latin America, Africa, & Caribbean, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The addition of the 787 to the LAN fleet will help it maintain that leadership edge by increasing its global presence and bringing a new and exciting flying experience to more passengers in more locations around the world."

The first cities that LAN's fleet of 787s will fly to are Santiago, Buenos Aires, Lima, Los Angeles, Madrid and Frankfurt. The aircraft will begin to fly commercially in the next few months, and these routes will be added gradually during its first year of operation.
