CC-BBA Delivery by Powercube, on Flickr

With the delivery to LAN and also 1 for ANA on the last day of the month Boeing delivered a total of 4 787s in August. Although that is less then was expected for the month it's still the month with the most deliveries to date. It means that 19 have been delivered in total and 16 this year, still a way to go for the 35-45 target for 2012. But it should not be a problem with 4 months to go and a likely increase in deliveries. The production has also increased from 3.5 to 5 with the start of the surge line, 4 in Everett and 1 in Charleston.

For this month we have.
Qatar Airways - this one was pushed back from last month, probably some costumer specific features needed certification resulting in extra test flights. This delay actually means that they could take delivery of 2 787s this month.

United - still on schedule to take delivery of their 1st 787 as planned.

China Southern - Their 1st delivery is expected for the end of the month

Air India - Last month was a yes, no, yes, no, yes, no situation. But hopefully for them the bureaucracy nonsense will be over and they could take delivery of 3 or 4 787s this month.

ANA - There are 2 more 787s that already have made their 1st flight, they should be delivered this month.

JAL - They also should receive 2 this month.

Ethiopian - 1 delivery, their 2nd 787.

LAN- 1 delivery, their 2nd 787.

It could be 15 deliveries this month. And even though it's unlikely that all of them will happen it's still a big increase if only half of this number is delivered.

They certainly know how to rub it in QFs face considering they cancelled a firm order for 35 frames earlier in the week... Boy that must suck...

Air India to Get Dreamliner This Week

By SANTANU CHOUDHURY
Source: Wall Street Journal
August 27, 2012, 3:09 p.m. ET

NEW DELHI--Air India is set to take delivery this week of its first Boeing Co. 787 Dreamliner after a wait of some four years and following a long, public battle between the airline and the jet maker over compensation for the delayed planes.

The first of the aircraft could land in New Delhi on Wednesday or Thursday, and two more will follow "in quick succession," an Air India executive said Monday.

If some formalities, such as documentation, "are completed today, the first plane should arrive Wednesday or Thursday," said the executive, declining to be named.

Air India ordered a total of 27 Dreamliner jets in 2005 as part of a $15 billion, 111-plane contract with Boeing and Airbus.

The delivery of the long-range 787s should be a boost to loss-making Air India's efforts for a turnaround by starting flights to new destinations.

Starting additional flights are crucial for Air India to regain market share, especially on its overseas routes, which have been weaned away by carriers such as Emirates Airline, Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Singapore Airlines Ltd.

The fuel-efficient Dreamliners would also enable Air India to cut costs by replacing older planes. The airline has posted losses for the past five years, due partly to high fuel and interest costs, which have been exacerbated by intensifying competition on domestic and overseas routes.

Dinesh Keskar, president of Boeing India, didn't immediately respond to questions.

Air India will join two Japanese carriers--All Nippon Airways Co. and Japan Airlines Co.--and Ethiopian Airlines in operating the Dreamliner, with as many as six more carriers set to receive them this year.

The delivery of the twin-aisle planes was delayed for several years due to production problems at Boeing, leading Air India to seek compensation.

Earlier this year, India's aviation ministry said it had asked Boeing to pay nearly $1 billion to Air India for the delay and that the Chicago company has agreed to pay half that amount. Boeing disputed that claim.

The Indian government on Aug. 3 permitted Air India to take delivery of the planes from Boeing after the two sides signed a confidential compensation agreement.

The Air India executive said the planes would be deployed initially on domestic routes for six to eight weeks, before moving on to international routes.

"We will start with flights to Melbourne and Sydney, as well as Western Europe," the executive said.

Boeing will deliver the first three Dreamliners from its new North Charleston facility in South Carolina.

Responding to a question about the recent failure of a General Electric Co. GEnx engine during a taxi test in South Carolina on a Dreamliner destined for Air India, the executive said: "We wouldn't have taken delivery of the planes if they were not safe."

He declined to elaborate.

The executive said Air India plans to raise money by selling the planes to leasing companies and hiring them.

The airline has arranged a bridge loan of $195 million from Standard Chartered Bank PLC to fund the purchase of the first two Dreamliners.

It is seeking an additional $500 million loan for the next four Dreamliners.

If it finally happens, I guess the order would be: Air India, Qatar Airways, United and China Southern.

Besides these airlines I only recall LOT 787 being built (two actually).

Who else might get a 787 before the year's end? Maybe Royal Air Maroc and Hainan Airlines?

2 weeks ago there were the same kind of articles that Air India would get their 1st 787 last week. With the earlier delays I have become a bit skeptical to say it lightly. I only believe it when one of the 787s actually touches down in India.

About the other deliveries, I think it will only be Hainan that will also get their 1st 787 this year. Probably in October. Their 1st one is now in paint, we should see it in it's full Hainan livery very soon.

The 2 Royal Air Maroc 787s are still in storage on the runway in Everett. Because these are 2 early frames they need lots of rework, and nothing has been done on them until now. It will take longer then 4 months to get them ready for delivery, it won't be in 2012. They might not even take delivery of these 2 frames and have a later build as their 1st one, like LAN who also skipped their 2 early build overweight frames. There are several other smaller airlines that have said that they will take these frames for a nice price.

And because the next 9 known production slots won't be for any new airline there's also no chance that there will be a 1st delivery for another airline that will get a newly manufactured 787.

Boeing is expanding it's factories in Charleston, South Carolina.

Boeing South Carolina expanding again

During the same week Boeing South Carolina was scheduled to deliver its first 787 Dreamliner to Air India, it was also scheduled to begin its latest North Charleston campus expansion.

According to recent state filings, the local plane-making plant is extending its aft-fuselage factory at Charleston International Airport, and Thursday was the start date of the year-and-a-half project.

And according to a county filing from July, Boeing is already in the process of modifying or expanding its nearby mid-body assembly building.

It’s not clear what the overall plan is, as Boeing did not respond to questions about the projects Friday. But analysts who follow the company figure it’s part of the plan to ramp up 787 production significantly over the next couple of years.

These factories build several parts of the 787-8 & 787-9 that will be used in the local assembly line and the lines in Everett, Washington.

The 5th 787 for JAL, JA828J waved goodbye to Everett yesterday. This is the 1st delivery of September and the 20th in total.

And some news from Boeing about the 787-9, the production of the 1st parts is well underway.
Quote:
Taking shape

The 787-9 is one giant step closer to reality. Major assembly on the first airplane is now underway. Things kicked off on time when Boeing partner Kawasaki Heavy Industries began installing passenger door frames in the forward midbody fuselage.

When complete, that section will hitch a ride on the Dreamlifter to North Charleston where the Boeing South Carolina team will integrate it with other 787 structures. Final assembly will take place in Everett in 2013. First flight of the 787-9 is still set for 2013 and first delivery in 2014.

Reaching this milestone is a significant step for the program—and making it happen on schedule is even more impressive. I can’t wait to see this airplane in the skies very soon.

Finally, and luckily for all the parties involved the predictions came out.

Quote:
Boeing celebrates delivery of Air India's first 787 Dreamliner

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C., Sept. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Air India today celebrated the delivery of the airline's first 787 Dreamliner.

"Today is a great day for Air India as the most technologically advanced and fuel efficient airplane in the world joins our fleet," said Rohit Nandan, Air India Chairman & Managing Director. "The 787 will allow Air India to open new routes in a dynamic marketplace and provide the best in-flight experience for our passengers."

Air India is only the fifth airline in the world to take delivery of a 787 Dreamliner.

This delivery is the first of 27 Dreamliners for Air India. The airplane is equipped with 18 business class seats and 238 economy class seats.

The 787 has the range and capability to allow Air India to deploy the Dreamliner on many routes including the Middle East, Europe, Asia and Australia.

"We are pleased to celebrate another historic moment in our nearly seven-decade long relationship," said Dinesh Keskar, senior vice president of Asia Pacific and India Sales for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "I am sure Air India and their customers will be thrilled to experience the revolutionary features on the 787, an airplane that will be the key focus of the airline's turnaround plan."

Air India's first 787 Dreamliner was assembled in Everett, Wash. and delivered today from Boeing's South Carolina delivery center. The airplane is scheduled to fly to Delhi on Friday.

The 787 Dreamliner is an all-new airplane featuring a host of technologies that provide exceptional value to airlines and unparalleled levels of comfort to passengers. It is the first mid-size airplane capable of flying long-range routes, enabling airlines to open new, non-stop routes preferred by the traveling public.

Boeing has made a special webpage for the Air India delivery, including a cool video of the assembly of the 1st 787 at North Charleston.

Another video about the preparation of the 1st delivery to LAN was uploaded on Boeing channel a couple of days ago.
