You mean the standard 9-abreast (3-3-3) on the 787.

So far only JAL and ANA have chosen for the luxury 8-abreast option. And that's not a surprise, ANA already has a 777-300ER version with just 215 seats. They never use a dense lay-out on their long-haul product.

Afraid we can't say the same about their domestic configuration! I'm terrified to ask how many seats have been squeezed into the domestic B787s...?

On the plus side a domestic flight in Japan is going to take like a half hour. I you find yourself in the back of one United's, Qatar's or Ethiopian's really long haul routes the seat width is going to get really obnoxious. I doubt there will be a huge difference in personal space in JAL or ANA domestic economy vs the aforementioned airlines long haul products, its not possible to do something like their 10 abreast domestic 777s

Or 520+ seats on their B744D... However, I must ask is this the most generous seating available to date on the B787...

The seats on a 9-abreast 787 have the same wide as the seats of a the standard 10-abreast configuration on the 747.

It can only become cramped at the back if the 9-abreast goes all the way to the very back of the plane. Even on the ANA's highest density configuration the last 2 full rows only have 7 seats. And United only has the 3 middle seats on the last 2 rows, they might not be the best seats, but not because of the seat width.

In terms of their internationally configured 787s yes, 8 a breast seating with 34" pitch in econ and fully lie flat in business in a 1-2-1/1-1-1 staggered layout. JAL's configuration seems similar in economy, though there may be just a bet less space in business. And by the way wikipedia (I know its not official but seems probable) is listing ANA's high density domestic at 335 seats, which is the most that I have seen for the type, though its only seating 12 F with 323 Y taking up the vast majority of the aircraft. Their initial low density domestic is at a very comfortable 264 seats with similar Y class to their international configuration, but again only 12 seats in First. Also their 747-400D is configured for 565 presently.

The Wall Street Journal says that Lion Air has ordered another 10 787-8s.

Quote:
Lion Air Places Order For More Boeing Planes

KUALA LUMPUR—Lion Air has ordered 10 more Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner passenger jets to boost its long-haul flight capability, crucial to its ambition to emerge as an aggressive player in the Asian-Pacific air-travel market in what amounts to a challenge to the region's biggest discount airliner, AirAsia.

The plane order comes atop five Dreamliners that Indonesian budget carrier Lion Air committed to purchasing in June. The additional purchase would be a welcome relief to Boeing following last month's canceled order for 35 Dreamliners from Australia's Qantas Airways Ltd.

(or better search the full article via Google)
Other sources say that only has the intention to buy the extra planes. We'll see on soon enough if it's a firm order when Boeing comes out with a press release or Thursday when they update their order list.

It looks like the 2 787s for Royal Air Maroc that are already assembled and are now waiting for rework won't to RAM.

Quote:
RAM defers 787 delivery until 2014

Posted 12 September 2012 ·

Moroccan national carrier Royal Air Maroc is believed to have deferred delivery of its Boeing 787s until at least the end of 2014.

RAM was due to be one of the first recipients of the type with deliveries planned for this year and the aircraft – in RAM colours – has been seen at the Seattle Boeing factory.

But according to Flightglobal, the airline says the postponement is due to a reconfiguration of Boeing's delivery schedule, and that Royal Air Maroc would now be receiving aircraft with better specifications.

full article:
http://www.arabianaerospace.aero/ram...ntil-2014.html
They have to wait a bit longer but will get better, non overweight 787s.

With this info we can conclude that there are up to 10 early produced 787 originally destined for ANA, LAN and RAM that are up for grabs by other airlines. Lion Air, Transaero & Rwanda Air are some the airlines that are rumored to take these 787s.

I bashed the 9 abreast seat configuration earlier but noticed that United is using 9 abreast with 18.3 inch wide seats. Japan Airlines 8-abreast configuration as 18.5 inch wide seats. How is United doing that?

really narrow aisles or somebody's got their numbers wrong. ANA and JAL are both giving a double armrest in the center of each row which adds a couple of inches, but I don't see how united would be getting to that width without a very narrow aisle. I thought most of the 9 abreast layouts were using 17.8" seats.

Nope,

see this blog for a full production list:
http://nyc787.blogspot.nl/

The last 2 days there also 3 first flights, 2 for the next 2 Ethiopian 787s from Everett and 1 for Air India from Charleston. This last one was the plane that had it's engine blown out some weeks ago on a test engine run before it's initial planned first flight.

Ethiopian

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/BOE264

Air India
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/BOE238

It's good that Boeing is picking up speed with the deliveries, although some of the initially planned deliveries for September have already slipped to October.
