I thought 9 abreast meant 17.8" or less as well. I wonder why Boeing didn't make the fuselage a little wider to accommodate a more comfortable 9 abreast layout. I guess that would really mean airlines could go for an uncomfortable 10 abreast layout instead.

The engine blow out of the Air India 787 at the end of July was followed by 2 more incidents, the NTSB is now grounding the GEnx powered 787 and 747-8s that haven't been inspected yet.
Quote:
NTSB urges grounding for certain GEnx-powered 787 and 747-8s

US aircraft safety investigators have called for grounding certain Boeing 787s and 747-8s powered by General Electric engines until they are inspected for cracks and also revealed that a cracked fan midshaft was discovered on a third engine last month.

The recommendations issued by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) offer the clearest explanation yet for the rash of zero- or low-time GEnx engine failures since 28 July.

The NTSB letter sent to the Federal Aviation Administration also reveals that an analysis of the fan midshaft fractures do not point to metal fatigue as a likely cause. The fan midshaft connects the low pressure turbine to the fan and booster stages at the forward end of the engine.

Instead, the cracks in the critical engine component are "typical of environmentally assisted cracking of certain high strength alloys such as that used on the GEnx [fan midshaft]", the NTSB letter says. The NTSB is continuing to investigate what is triggering the environmentally assisted cracking. According to GE, such metals crack as a result of galvanic corrosion caused by a moist environment with the presence of hydrogen.

A potential trigger of the galvanic corrosion could have been revealed earlier this week. In a statement issued by GE on 11 September, the company said it has changed the coating process for the fan midshaft on the production line as a result of the engine failures. GE says today that the new coating process changes the dry film applied to the midshaft, and replaces the lubricant used when a retaining nut is clamped to the midshaft.

The NTSB's letter to the FAA indicates all three engine failures discovered to date could be linked to the same cause.

full article:
http://www.flightglobal.com/news/art...747-8s-376525/
After the 1st incident a 2nd engine on a 787 that hadn't flown yet was found with a cracked shaft during an ultrasound inspection of one of the planes in Everett. It's not known which particular plane this was, but the engine has been replaced. The 3rd incident was earlier this week on an Air Bridge Cargo 747-8F where one of the engines failed during the early stages of the take off in Shanghai. The pilots could still safely abandon the take-off before more damage could be done.

All the 787s and the 747-8I that are currently in commercial service have already had an inspection of the engines, they are not grounded because of this issue. For the 747-8F there are still several planes that didn't have their inspection, the NTSB has now urged the operators to do the inspection on a very short notice.

It's especially concerned that the problem will happen mid air and on several engines at the same time, especially in ETOPS areas.

GE says it has changed the manufacturing process of the engine midshaft, hopefully this is also the cause of the problems. The NTSB will continue their investigations to find the source of the cracks.

The official safety recommendation issued by the NTSB:

BA has announced the projected delivery date of their 1st 787.

British Airways confirms first 787, A380 delivery dates

"The first 787-8 is expected to arrive in May 2013; a further three of the type should be delivered by year end."

~~~~~~
Qatar's CEO Akbar al-Baker has for the 1st time voice some concern about the 787.
"The Qatar Airways chief executive also raised concerns about Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner, saying the carrier has problems with technical issues regarding the plane and the "quality of the cabin." He did not elaborate."
http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/5...r-787.html.csp
Their 1st 787 is ready for delivery and was scheduled for delivery last month but has been delayed until further notice. The current engine problems with the GEnx are most likely the main cause of the delay. Qatar is known for being very critical about their new planes, they won't take any new plane with such a problem. We have to wait and see how this will develop.
~~~~~~

And Air India has also found an excuse to delay more deliveries after their 1st one in the engine problems. Although they will start commercial service on domestic routes this Wednesday.

The Air India talk about more delays was just a rumor because right now their 2nd delivered 787 (LN 29, VT-AND) is on route from Charleston to Frankfurt where it will make a stopover on it's way to Delhi.

You can follow the flight here:
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/AIC170

This is the 2nd delivery for Air India, the 3rd delivery this month, the 19th this year and the 22nd in total.

ANA has firmed 11 of their 50 options for the 787.

Quote:
ANA to order additional eleven Boeing 787s

TOKYO September 21, 2012 – ANA Group, Japan’s largest airline group, today announces that it is placing orders for eleven additional Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. ANA currently has 55 Dreamliners on order, thirteen of which have so far been delivered, and the new order today will take ANA’s fleet of this innovative and fuel-efficient airliner to 66 in total. All eleven aircraft will be the B787-9 model and will be delivered between fiscal year 2018 and 2021. This will give ANA a fleet of 36 B787-8 aircraft and 30 B787-9 versions.

ANA’s future fleet plans involve the gradual replacement of the Boeing 767 and Boeing 777-200 with the 787. The fuel efficiency of the B787-9 is similar to that of the B787-8, while it has greater seat, helping support the profitable expansion of ANA’s international and domestic route networks.

ANA is the launch customer for the Dreamliner and started its first 787 operation in October last year. The aircraft is now flying eight domestic Japanese routes as well as Haneda – Frankfurt. ANA also plans to launch a new route from Narita to San Jose on the US West Coast starting January next year using the 787, while the current Narita – Seattle service will switch to 787 operations from October 1, and Haneda – Beijing to the 787 from October 28.

ANA press release:
http://www.ana.co.jp/eng/aboutana/press/index_sm.html
With these 11 787-9s they will have a total fleet of 66 787s. They already had the most orders for the 787, and with this order they will have the 2nd biggest operator of the 787-9 behind Etihad.

Boeing hasn't given out a press release about the order, but will likely do later today. If it's firm it will bring the net orders for 2012 to -25 and the gross orders to 35.

Qatar Airways 787 delivery delayed due to IFE, internet connectivity issues

The expected delivery of Qatar Airways' first 787 is being delayed because of issues with the IFE and specifically the Internet connectivity that the airline is equipping on its 787 fleet. They continue to test the aircraft even as far as flying it to Yuma Arizona on Sept. 20th and back. The Qatar Airways' delivery team from Doha is in Seattle right now so there must be hope that the issues would be resolved soon. No date has been set for delivery at this time. In related news, Strategic Aero has an interesting article about 777X and Qatar pushing Boeing to offer the aircraft for sale.

Boeing does continue to fly several Dreamliners that are slated for delivery soon including those for United, ANA (2), JAL and Ethiopian. These airplanes maybe delivered this week into next week and it is rumored that United pilots took out the 1st 787 for it's final customer test flight today prior to delivery. It does seem that Boeing is making a big push to get many of the 787s out the door as possible before the end of the month (and end of quarter). Here are the planes that I see possibly being delivered in the last 10 days of September:

Air India
ZA237 (LN 46, VT-ANI)

ANA
ZA135 (LN 66, JA815A)
ZA119 (LN 69, JA814A)

JAL
ZA178 (LN 27, JA824J)

Ethiopian
ZA263 (LN 71, ET-AOR)

United Airlines
ZA288 (LN 53, N20904)

Qatar Airways (tentative)
ZA461 (LN 58, A7-BCB)

If Boeing can get these seven airplanes delivered (they're very close) then they would have delivered 10 787s this month.

The 1st delivery to United is now very close. Yesterday they had a customer flight and Boeing already made a special website for the delivery that they haven't linked yet from the main page. But because the URL is always simple since they always use the airline code (I also checked QTR, it didn't work yet).

It has the best high speed assembly video to date, you have to check that one out.

http://www.newairplane.com/787/delivery/#/en/ual/

Here's the same assembly video on Youtube that they did for the Air India 1st delivery. The United one in the link above is better.

Interestingly they showed the assembly of the 1st 787 built in Charleston, SC that wasn't the 1st one that was delivered. This one will only be the 3rd 787 delivered to Air India that should happen this coming week according to the media.

Yesterday United flew their 1st 787 from the factory at Everett to Boeing Field in Seattle, a short flight of just 40 km / 25 miles, but they took an route via another small airport in Mid Washington State. It was a bit unclear why they did it, but has resulted in the 1st delivery of a 787 to North American airline.

Boeing Delivers United Airlines' First 787 Dreamliner

EVERETT, Wash., Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and United Airlines announced today the delivery of the airline's first 787 Dreamliner. United is the first airline in North America to take delivery of the 787.

Jeff Smisek, president and CEO of United, said, "As the North American launch customer, we are delighted to be getting our first 787 Dreamliner. As we continue to build the world's leading airline, we are excited for our customers and co-workers to experience this game-changing aircraft."

United has announced it will initially use the 787 on international routes to Africa, Asia and Europe. The airline will conduct temporary domestic flights before transitioning its 787 fleet to international service in late 2012.

"This 787 delivery represents the continuation in the more than 80-year partnership between our two companies," said Ray Conner, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "United now begins a new chapter with the 787 Dreamliner, the most technologically advanced commercial jetliner ever built. It reinforces United's commitment to be the world's leading airline by providing unmatched fuel efficiency and passenger comfort."

Made from composite materials, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the first mid-size airplane capable of flying long-range routes and will allow airlines to open new, non-stop routes preferred by the traveling public. In addition to providing airlines with unprecedented fuel economy and low operating costs, the 787 features a host of new technologies that greatly enhance the passenger experience.

This delivery marks the first of 50 Dreamliners that United has on order. The airline's 787 cabin is configured with 36 seats in United BusinessFirst, 72 seats in United Economy Plus and 111 seats in United Economy. Customers will be more comfortable with improved lighting, bigger windows, larger overhead bins, lower cabin altitude and enhanced ventilation systems, among other features.

United's first Dreamliner is expected to arrive in Houston later this week to begin a month-long training and certification program including non-commercial flights to each of United's domestic hubs.

press release Boeing
http://boeing.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=2424
United is the 6th airline to take delivery of the 787.

It was the 4th delivery this month, but ANA also took delivery of their 14th 787 today, that makes it the 5th in total. Making this month the best for 787 deliveries to date after August had 4 deliveries. The total number of delivered 787 now stands at 24

And the month is not yet finished, we can expect several more deliveries.
