So after those two will be delivered, how many 787s will both airlines have?

As of today, it's Japan Airlines doing Tokyo/Narita to Boston and vice versa.

Going by the date of first flight it's going to be the 4th for Ethiopian and the 3rd for Qatar.

Oh wow. That's a great sign indeed. Probably ET will finally have a daily rotation on the ADD-IAD flight (yet it has a stop in FCO heading to the US) because of this new acquisition.

They already have a (almost) daily rotation to Washington with the 2 787s they already have. There are just a couple of flights missing in the last couple of weeks. With the 3rd one that should be delivered any day now they will start a daily Addis Ababa – Harare – Lusaka – Addis Ababa that should continue until November. On 25 Nov. they will start to use the 787 on a daily Addis Ababa - Mumbai flight. But by then they should also have this 4th 787 that they also have to use. Anyway, their plans for the 787 have been very flexible until now, it could all be changed again next month.

As for the longest route, I looked at the distance where the Washington - Addis Ababa route is the longest. In flight time it's actually the Boston - Tokyo flight that is the longest, it's an hour longer then the Tokyo - Boston flight.

So, with NH and JL already having their own 787s, how many more of that aircraft would both of them get? And will SQ get that aircraft too to complement the 777s?

Here is an article from Channel NewsAsia. Although the main headline is about A380 and A350, there is a small part about the B787.

Quote:
Singapore Airlines to buy five more A380s, 20 A350s: statement
Posted: 24 October 2012 1740 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) is ordering five more Airbus A380 superjumbos and 20 A350s in a deal worth US$7.5 billion to grow its capacity and for fleet renewal, the airline said on Wednesday.

Deliveries are due to begin in 2017, the airline said in a statement.

The airline currently operates 19 A380 superjumbos and already had firm orders in place for 20 A350s, for delivery from 2015.

SIA said the A350s are intended for use on medium and long-haul routes.

As part of the deal, SIA said Airbus will acquire its five A340-500s, which will be removed from service in the fourth quarter of the 2013.

The airline said it will cease non-stop flights between Singapore and Los Angeles and between Singapore and Newark in view of a lack of replacement aircraft in its fleet with "sufficient range and operating economics".

SIA CEO Goh Choon Phong said: "Although (it is) disappointing that we will be halting these services, we remain very committed to the US market. Over the past two years we have increased capacity to both Los Angeles and New York by deploying A380 superjumbos on flights via Tokyo and Frankfurt. We will also continue to explore additional options to enhance our US services,"

In the statement, SIA also added that its Scoot unit will acquire 20 Boeing 787 aircraft to support its growth plans.

So for now this means that we won't see a 787 in Singapore Airlines colors, but that could always change if they order the 787-10 as the A330 replacement. The order for the 787-9 for Scoot is also very likely to be upgraded to the 787-10 since they will be replacing the 777-200s.

That seems to be the case. I find it sad that they will not be in SIA colours. Never really a fan of the Scoot colours. Hope that SIA decides to have their own fleet of 787.

Scoots press release about the 787.

Quote:
Scoot to Acquire Twenty 787 Aircraft

New Generation Fleet to Power Growth and Reduce Costs

24 October 2012, Singapore – Scoot, the long-haul low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, has agreed to acquire twenty Boeing 787 aircraft for delivery commencing in 2014.

The twenty fuel-efficient aircraft will be used to replace Scoot’s Boeing 777-200 fleet and facilitate the airline’s ongoing expansion.

“Since commencing operations in June 2012, Scoot has quickly established itself as a low-cost airline with a difference, with our fares, our crew and our product being exceptionally well received by the travelling public,” said Campbell Wilson, Scoot’s CEO. “In addition to a great reputation, Scoot has quickly grown to a fleet of four aircraft and a network soon to encompass nine cities. Today’s announcement that we’ll be acquiring 20 Boeing 787’s to power our growth is exciting news and great for our guests – not least because the aircraft’s fuel efficiency will help keep ticket prices low.”

Scoot’s 787s will sport a brand new interior as well as the 787’s enlarged windows and unique interior climatic system for a superior level of comfort.

The 20 aircraft were originally ordered by parent company Singapore Airlines. Selection of engines to power the fleet will be made at a later date.

With the 2014 service entry it most likely will be the 787-9 that they will be getting.
