The LN is indeed Line Number, it's the production order of the 787s.

You can find a list of the 1st 115 LN positions on this thread already frequently quoted blog:
http://nyc787.blogspot.com/

btw, Qatar's 787 will mostly be used on long haul routes, the current regional routes have always been mentioned as temporary crew training flights. But they could always keep some regional rotations in between the long-haul flights if the schedule permits it.

The first LN numbers for Qantas/Jetstar are not yet public.

They still expect the 1st one for Jetstar in mid 2013, the highest LN number that is now public should be delivered in May. It will probably be in the next 10 to 15 that will become public in late Feb/ early March 2013.

It's unclear when the 1st one fly for Qantas. They might use some of the 787-8 initially ordered for Jetstar for Qantas, but a quick search on the internet only made it more unclear. With the cancellation of the 787-9 order earlier this year, but with the keeping the options for a later delivery it looks like that it has been delayed. But they keep changing their plans constantly, any info now will most likely be outdated at the end of next year.

Ah now I get it. Thanks! So I'm now wondering if the 787 can surpass the 767 or 777 in terms of orders and popularity over time because of its unique design and composition.

The 767 now totals 1105 orders at the end of it's program life. The 777 now stands at 1,380 orders in the middle of it's program life.

The 787 already has 844 orders at the start of it's program life, it already has considerably more orders then the 767 and the 777 programs had at this stage. There's no doubt that it will surpass the 767 in the years to come. Catching up with the 777 will take a bit longer since there will also be more orders for the 777 with the upcoming upgrades.

The 787 still has several new versions to come, 1st with the start of assembly of the 787-9 and the launch of the 787-10 in 2013. in the future there will be a freighter version, and at some point there will be re-engined versions as the engine technology also advances. Boeing even predicts that it will sell 5,000 787s in the next 20 years. We'll have to see if it will be that many, but there's no doubt that it will overshadow both the 767 and the 777 programs when it comes to sales.

if that's the case, then the 787 will indeed be the aircraft of my generation as it will have a lot (thousands) of orders over time. And when you say that a Boeing aircraft program lasts 20 years, then 844 orders from the beginning is definitely a sign of what's to come with this aircraft... Perhaps a comparison between 737 and 787 sales would be good as well, or is it something else?

There have been 5 first flights in the 1st 6 days of the month.

LN78, SP-LRB, LOT
LN82, A7-BCC, Qatar
LN59, JA817A, ANA
LN83, JA818A, ANA

You are right, apparently it didn't fly under it's usual flight number the 1st time so it looked like it's first flight on Flightaware. I just noticed that I wasn't logged in into flightaware since all my cookies were reset yesterday, so I couldn't see the 1st flight there anymore.

So this is the actual list with the next 1st flight for United that is in the air right now.

LN78, SP-LRB, LOT
LN82, A7-BCC, Qatar
LN59, JA817A, ANA
LN83, JA818A, ANA
LN52, N27903, United

edit: see above and...

The LN84, JA829J, JAL has also filed a flightpath for a 1st flight today.

Looking good for AI's nth B787 indeed. This could become a story of a future successful aircraft, similar to its sibling, the B777. I find the two of them evolving a lot more soon, yet it seems like the B787 will enjoy a much more fun evolution because of its unique design and ergonomics.

The 1st delivery in December is the LN80, CC-BBC for LAN, it's currently on route to Santiago.

Delivery stats:
December: 1
LAN: 3
2012: 36
total: 39

Qatar's 3rd 787 (A7-BCA) that was contractually delivered on 11/21 is now also on route to it's home base.Right on time for the start of the London flights. This also means that we could see the delivery of the 4th, LN62, A7-BCK in the next couple of days to go to California for the IFE installation by Thales.

Looks like active planes will be grounded for checks

Quote:
Improperly assembled parts in Boeing's newest jet could cause the planes to run out of fuel, experience "engine power loss or shutdown, or leaks on hot engine parts that could lead to a fire," the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said in issuing a formal rule requiring U.S. carriers to inspect the fuel systems.
