787 Best Plane Ever

The 7th of January I took the ANA Dreamliner from seattle to Narita Tokyo. I flew coach. I did not know what to expect.... crossing the Pacific on an airplane is about 10 hours of dreadful experience, particularly if you fly coach....

Once inside the Dreamliner pretty soon it became obvious that I was in a much better plane than for example the 777. The interior lighting of the plane is all LED and is softer and nicer than the usual fluorescent lights you find in other planes.

The bins for storage are huge, no need to fight for overhead bin space. Also, the ceiling of the plane in the center of the cabin is much higher than in other planes. You immediately feel that there is more space inside the plane.

Perhaps the most surreal experience of flying the Dreamliner is that when you cross the Pacific going Westbound the daylight hours seem endless. It was like 2 PM in the afternoon in the middle of the Pacific but already night time for the passengers, thanks to the electronic tinting of the windows you were looking outside and it felt we were at 9 PM at night...

Also some of the restrooms at the ANA plane for the first time are the size of small rooms. No more banging your elbows against the partitions... the restroom was so big that I could not avoid thinking how easy sex could be had on a toilet that size LOL.

Did I mentioned the size of the windows?... I was seating on the aisle seat and still I could see everything that was happening outside of the plane... like the clouds passing by the plane, etc.

The entertainment system was a notch above to what I am usually used to.... The size of the LCD screens is larger, no more those tiny screens so hard to wacth. The navigation maps telling you were the plane is were a lot better than what I had seen before and the entertainment selection was humongous, like 44 movies (new ones), countless shows, games, whatever you wanted. Again, I was flying economy class.

My return flight was in a brand new 777 from United (my 787 return flight had been cancelled due to the ongoing grounding of the plane). I had the chance to compare a brand new 777 and a 787 crossing the Pacific...The 787 flight was so much better, there is absolutely no comparison....

So impressed I was with the 787 that I was even thinking that if at some point they might have a smaller version Dreamliner plane to replace the 737's......

The NTSB has another briefing later today, but there's already lots of news in the media about it.

"FAA gives Boeing approval to fly one 787 from Texas to Everett"

"NTSB 'weeks away' from finding cause of 787 woes"
http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20130206/BIZ/130209921

"Boeing Preps Redesign to Get 787 Flying Again"

Boeing Co. is proposing a series of battery design changes that it believes would minimize the risks of fire on its 787 Dreamliners and allow the grounded jets to fly again while it continues searching for a longer-term fix, say government and industry officials briefed on the matter.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...674930066.html

The redesigned batteries will have an increased separation between the different cells and better heat sensors. If they are approved it won't take too long to install these on the planes that are currently grounded, the 787 could fly again next month. But this fix doesn't solve the root cause of the problem, that could be a reason for the authorities to be very critical. They might give a temporary approval as Boeing will design a long term permanent fix.

This "one 787 from Texas to Everett" is LN43 ZA382 B-2727 for China Southern sitting currently in Ft. Worth.
Maybe SP-LRA will return to Everett too, for fix and then fly away to Warsaw again.

Some good news for a change, AA has firmed up their order for 42 787s.
http://active.boeing.com/commercial/orders/index.cfm

The total number of orders is now 890, with 50 deliveries.

The total number still hasn't reached the peak in 2008 when the 787 had 910 orders.

That 787 would be looking very nice in the new American colours..

My cousin was planning on flying this service, she came home dissapointed .

By the way, that is a lot of money loss on this re-schedule, specially with those idiots asking to be booked in a different flight just because it was not an 787 as they expected .

They're not idiots. I'm sure a lot of people booked those flights just to be on the 787 which must have been heavily advertised by the airline.

Idiots in the sense that when they find out it was not a 787 many chose a 777 over the 767, one of my cousin's co-workers did it, although it meant taking another route.

Modified battery doesnt address the failure of the safety systems to prevent or warn of fire. Boeing could be required to meet the FAA Lithium battery standards which is narrowly avoided by recieving certification before they came in. There is also the risk that they will require recertification by a 3rd party as the FAA outsourced the initial certification tests on the 787 to Boeing themselves.
