These straight-edge fan blades look like they came out of 1980. Is that the 787 engine?

It is not 787 engine. I think that one is 767 engine.

This is ANA's 787 engine:

Qatar Air CEO says 787 grounding muted Chicago debut
April 11, 2013
Chicago Tribune

The grounding of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner has had a “serious impact” on Qatar Airways and has limited new flights to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, the airline's CEO said in Chicago on Thursday.

“We were supposed to come here daily, but now we are coming only three times a week due to the aircraft shortage,” CEO Akbar Al Baker said.

Qatar always planned to use Boeing 777-300 Extended Range aircraft on the route from Chicago to Doha, Qatar. But because its 787 Dreamliners are grounded due to overheating problems with its onboard batteries, Qatar Airways has had to downsize its plans for Chicago and use those 777 planes elsewhere.

“Our plans for expansion were severely disrupted,” Al Baker said. “We had to reschedule several expansion plans.”

Looks like this B787 holds a special livery... hopefully, this aircraft type will restart operations soon.

LN32 ZA235 VT-ANG for Air India completed, at compass rose yesterday:
image hosted on flickr

Paine Field 4-15-13 by moonm, on Flickr

Temporary registration stick removed from SP-LRC.
LN93 ZA383 B-2733 for China Southern Airlines is in the flightline. Probably for engine removal.
JA821A painted, in the Fuel Dock.
G-ZBJA for British Airways in Paint Hangar.

And some good news appears. Many sites says "787 will fly soon".

In fact, VT-ANG rolled out in the beginning of the month. See http://paineairport.com/kpae6181.htm

Do you mean JA821A for ANA? Because JA821J is a JAL registration (and this one is still inside the EMC).

Today there will be hearing by the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation about the FAA. The current grounding will be an topic discussed here,

Quote:
Aviation Safety: FAA's Progress on Key Safety Initiatives

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation announced the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation has rescheduled the hearing titled “Aviation Safety: FAA’s Progress on Key Safety Initiatives” on April 16, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. This hearing will examine the consequences of sequestration on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the agency’s efforts to implement safety provisions in recent FAA reauthorizations, and the status of the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board’s ongoing investigation of the Boeing 787.

“The U.S. maintains the safest aviation system in the world. It is because the FAA, aircraft manufacturers, and airline employees hold safety as their number one priority,” said Rockefeller. “The FAA is in the process of implementing a number of new aggressive safety initiatives and it is appropriate to review the agency’s progress. We must remain diligent in our oversight of the aviation industry to continue operating the safest system in the world.”
http://www.commerce.senate.gov/publi...1-de668ca1978a

The FAA and the NTSB will talk about the 787, it could give us more insight on how long it will take before the FAA makes a final decision.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood also made a comment in the press about the 787, he said that a decision will be made soon but that they are not rushing it.

I'm surprised the airlines affected by the B787 groundings didn't receive authority from FAA to ferry their aircraft back to home base...

Boeing has scheduled 2 787 flights for today.

LN34, ZA380, China Southern Airlines, 1st flight

These flights come on the day that Reuters reports that the approval could be given next week.

Exclusive: FAA nears decisive step in restoring 787 to flight

(Reuters) - U.S. regulators are close to approving a key document that could start the process of returning Boeing Co's grounded 787 Dreamliner to service within weeks, according to several people familiar with the matter.

The document could be approved as early as next week, said two of the sources, asking not to be identified because the discussions remain confidential.

@EK413
There might have been some demands or restrictions that didn't make it worthwhile to make a ferry flight. But since the ANA 787 at Frankfurt and the United 787 at Narita have also been on the move at the airports in the recent days it does look like there will be several ferry flights in the near future.

Paine Field Blog is showing a picture of one of China Southern's 787 getting ready for a flight.

Great news for the 787 program. We will see British Airways's and Norwegian Shuttle's first 787 fly soon.

It doesn't look like any of the 2 787 are actually flying.

"ZA512 has the new DuraFlame battery, went screaming down the rwy, stopped then back to the ramp:"
https://twitter.com/mattcawby/status/324937707824496640

According to Flightaware the flight was also a couple of minutes long, too short to be an actual flight.

This is actually back to business as usual, except that maybe the long grounding will cause some more problems then usual. These machines are designed to fly, not to sit idle on the tarmac for several months. Even the ones that have had several flights pre delivery before the grounding will have to do some more flights to see if everything is still working as it should.

Fklightaware doesn't really know what happening today with the 787, it's sure it's confusing for a computer.

In other news,

Ethiopian has said that it will resume flying the 787 from next week (April 25) on their Dubai flights.
http://airlineroute.net/2013/04/18/et-787-apr13update/

If they will actually use the 787 it will mean that they will be flying the plane without the new batteries. Even though it highly unlikely that something will happen with the batteries during these flight it's still a risk to take. And it's something that they can only do if the local regulators will allow it. But since they won't be flying to the US, Europe or Japan I don't think this will be a big problem. I can imagine that Air India will also do something like this with domestic or regional flights.

Apparently the Boeing teams are already in Addis Abeba so they've probably started modifying the aircraft already.
