JAL product is pretty much the same all over it's long-haul fleet. When it comes to Economy Class the 767 actually have the best seats when it comes to width and pitch. With it's large business class section the 787 is used by JAL mostly on the long thin routes with more business travel then leisure travel, like Moscow, San Diego, Boston and Helsinki. These are actually premium routes, they might be thin but are higher yielding.

So JAL is actually using the plane as Boeing advertised it. ANA is using it much more divers since they are also using it for domestic flights. They also use it on a heavy international route like Frankfurt (although from Haneda) and thin routes like San Jose.

As for the other operators, they haven't got the number of 787s or the time to start to use the 787 as they wanted to. But it will be diverse, and let's be honest a plane that can be used to replace anything from the 757 to the 747 on all different routes is a much a better advertising for the 787 then that it's just for long thin routes. Something that is demonstrated by it's sales success, the 787 would not have gotten a record breaking number of orders, currently 890 if it was only optimized for a very specific type of route.

@EK413

That is actually a good question since it's mixed. ANA will do the modifications on location. United flies their unmodified 787s to San Antonio in Texas for the modifications. Qatar Airways and LOT have flown their stranded 787 back to their bases. Air India had already ferried all planes back to Mumbai in February, they were already at the base. It's a mixed answer.

ps.

ANA made their first 787 flight today, so their test flight program has started.

BA is replacing its international 767's with the 787-8 and, yes, they will be just 3 class. However, look at how many of BA's 77E's are configured with 4 classes. I see the 789 operating new routes to emerging markets but also operating existing routes more efficiently, especially where there isn't demand for a 77E year round.

Thought LOT was having their unmodified 787s flown to Addis Abeba for modification.

Only 2 JAL's Dreamliners has still old livery - LN20 ZA175 JA821J and LN21 ZA176 JA823J, both are under change incorporation/re-work. After completion will be repainted in new livery.

Some news on the Chinese front.

Quote:
China Seen Approving 787s in May

HAIKOU, China—China's aviation regulator will likely grant approval next month for Boeing 787 aircraft to begin commercial service with the nation's airlines, according to the chairman of China's fourth-biggest carrier, Hainan Airlines Co.

Hainan Airlines Chairman Wang Yingming said he expects the company to receive the first 787 within the next two months, though he said the timing will ultimately depend on when regulators certify the plane.

So they hang weights to the wings in the absence of engines? Does the wing twist upwards or what? Pretty odd.

Correct the weights prevent the frame from buckling

The wing will not twist. The aft section of an airplane is pretty heavy and the plane will tip over on its tail without the weights of its engines.

Its so nice to see the 787 flying again. Which one (China Southern or Hainan Airlines) will get their first.

The Chinese Southern frames had earlier production slots, it would be logical that they would get them first.

But in the end of the day it will just depend on which one is ready to be delivered earlier and which of the 2 want to take it 1st. It's most likely that both 1st deliveries will actually be very close after each other if not at the same time.

Another older 787 finished change incorporation. This one is either LN20 or LN21.
