This is always the period where I get most nervous, though. We already have one giant turd in that area, definitely don't need two. Hopefully we'll get something nice.

I love 500 5th Ave, too. This could be an amazing opportunity for some striking architectural interplay.

This is a good location for a tower this tall. I think 500 5th Avenue is a great tower, but I just never really liked te back side which is I guess were the evators are.

The area of 5th between 42nd and 48th has been the most downtrodden part of the avenue for a very long time. However, it is poised for a comeback. SL and Extell also a redeveloping a parcel on 46th and 5th, and other sites will be redeveloped too. I think that a lot more very tall towers will rise along this stretch.

This one could be a supertall ... "72 story plus mechanical rooms".

It says "perimeter wall height: 920 feet." Aside from a spire, how could it be taller than 920 feet? Does that just mean the outer wall will be 920 feet but a mechanical room or something could be higher in the middle of the roof (like the Sears Tower)?

Hot market for building sites draws crowd

Four development properties, where towers as high as 1,000 feet can be built, have hit the market in recent days. All told, the sale price may top $1.1 billion.

http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article...es-draws-crowd

Quote:
Inspired by the growing number of properties fetching upward of $1,000 per square foot in recent months, a growing number of landowners are putting their own holdings on the block. Four big development sites have hit the market, where they will likely bring record sums together totaling more than $1.1 billion.

Leading the charge is real estate investor Joe Sitt, who is seeking a buyer for 520 Fifth Ave., a big development site on the corner of West 43rd Street that he had planned to use as the launchpad for a property combining retail, hotel and residential space. Mr. Sitt’s firm, Thor Equities, spent the past year demolishing the existing building on the site, readying the parcel for development. About 350,000 square feet can be raised at the corner location, which is expected to sell for $350 million or more. Andrew Scandalios, a senior broker at HFF, is leading a team that is marketing the property to local and international buyers.

I hope something worthy rises here .

Until very recently, this was still a sub-prime area, but it is rapidly turning the tide. 1 Vanderbilt will expedite the transformation.

These Classic Gotham gems need a worthy new neighbor.

This is moving along quickly! They are wasting no time, and to be honest this project took me by surprise (I haven't been following it).

I assumed from the recent article that Thor simply filed permits and seeks to flip the site. Mr. Wanda?

Is the news release saying that this tower won't be built, instead the developer who assembled the site is selling the entire site?????

A supertall certainly will rise here, but it likely won't be built by the site's current owner, Thor.

I have another question, sorry about that. The rendering shown says 'old rendering' is that still the 71-story tower or what????? Or an earlier design before the 71-story proposal?????

Thought I'd add this building to a render of One Vanderbilt just to see how it fits in, it's just a box like the current massing model and it's roughly 280m!

I think it looks great, helps to balance One Vandy out a bit, but at the same time it still acts as an icon to the area, with 520 building the skyline up to it from the west side

I agree, it would help balance things out. Do you know why I love projects like this?? Because of it's height the effect would force other future developments in the area to go taller to offer superior unimpeded city views.
