Everything is this photo will be razed.

The building in the middle actually looks quite nice.

SL Green owns a few of those low-rises, and Extell owns some air rights and a few more building(s). They are both eyeing at commercial development.

The whole block is out of place, but I find the Tudor-esque building quite charming. It would be a shame if the replacement is another 1960s box. If they acquire more adjacent buildings, I hope they don't demolish 576 Fifth Avenue, because that would be an atrocity.

Extell's building at W 47th St. is part of the assemblage, as is 574 5th, both of which are beautiful. A bunch of lousy buildings which Extell owns on W 46th also are part of the site. I suspect that this could be another 300m tower for NY.

Here's the 47th St tower.

Here's the junk on 46th that is coming down.

Very nice. Are we looking at residential, hotel, mixed use, or office here, Lex?

I assume hotel/condo. SL Green is developing the retail.

Thanks! Sounds awesome. I'd live on 5th!

It's about time 30 Rock and Bear Stearns got some company in this area!

This is a shame. Pretty attractive buildings, imo. They should be rehabbed.

The Tudor and the one next to it are horrible. This is the worst stretch of 5th,

The block to the south is worse, even if it's in better condition.

Whatever is built, hopefully it comes out better than 158 Madison Avenue.

I think the block to the south is ok. Do you have a photo for non-New Yorkers?

5th in the 40s has been neglected for some time.

The buildings from left to right are 550, 554, 556, and 560 Fifth Avenue. All were constructed before or during the 1910s.

446 Fifth Avenue, the 1980s glass office tower barely seen in the above image, wraps around the back of 550 Fifth Avenue.

556 Fifth Avenue was originally a famous art gallery, and is currently the Philippine Center. The Filipinos sodomized the facade in the 1970s by stripping it of its elements and covering it with prefabricated concrete panels, only to remove them later on. 554 and 560 Fifth Avenue are the crummy low-rises flanking the Philippine Center.

The block has certainly been better days...

While 556 Fifth Avenue has considerable historical value, I wouldn't mind seeing everything from 554 to 560 Fifth Avenue demolished for an architecturally commensurate tower consistent with the neighborhood today.

But for the building on the north corner, that block has been ruined. As this part of 5th is now starting to gentrify, this whole block surely will be redeveloped in ten years. A nice 900'+ tower should ameliorate the desecration somewhat.

As noted, the stretch of 5th from 48th through 43rd is the worst part of the avenue. Hopefully, very tall towers, like what's planned for 520, will give the area some cachet.

Here's the site yesterday. Sadly, The nice building with the cornice on E 47th St is coming down too. I believe that Extell also owns the adjacent, "Jewelers on Fifth" building, which is stunning. I would not be surprised if Gary razes it because he wants the tenants to move into the Gem Tower, and his partner, SLG, probably wants the full block for its planned retail condo.

This is a huge site, which encompasses properties on 46th and 47th Streets. I wonder if Extell will break the 300m mark.

The first 3 buildings on 5th from the corner of 46th will be no great loss.

All of these buildings on 46th are coming down. They were once nice, but, as this area was so forlorn for so long, they're beaten down now.
