BERLIN | Marx-Engels-Forum, Marien Quarter and Molkenmarket (historical center) - Redevelopment

Marx-Engels-Forum is a public park in the central Mitte district of Berlin, the capital of Germany. It is named for Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, authors of The Communist Manifesto of 1848 and regarded as the founders of the socialist movement. The park was created by the authorities of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) in 1986.

The Marx-Engels-Forum lies on the eastern bank of the Spree river. It is bound to the south-west by the river, to the north-west by Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, to the north-east by Spandauer Straße and to the south-east by Rathausstraße obliquely opposite of the Rotes Rathaus. Across the river it faces the site formerly occupied by the Palast der Republik (now demolished) and the Berliner Stadtschloss.

Before World War II the area now occupied by Marx-Engels-Forum was a densely populated Old Town quarter between the river and Alexanderplatz, named after a street called Heiligegeiststraße (Holy Ghost Street) which ran across it between Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße (now Karl-Liebknecht-Straße) and Rathausstraße. The area including the main post office was heavily bombed during Allied air attacks in 1944/45 and most of its buildings reduced to ruins. After the war the ruins were cleared but nothing replaced them.

While the adjacent Nikolaiviertel was to be rebuilt, the GDR authorities in 1977 set up plans for a green space between the Palast der Republik and the Fernsehturm. The sculptor Ludwig Engelhardt was appointed as director of the project to redevelop the site as a tribute to Marx and Engels, the founders of the communist movement to whose ideology the GDR was dedicated. It consists of a rectangular wooded park with a large, circular paved area in the centre with a sculpture by Engelhardt, consisting of larger-than-life bronze figures of Marx (sitting) and Engels (standing). Behind the statues is a relief wall showing scenes from the history of the German socialist movement. The inauguration took place in 1986.

Marx-Engels-Forum and Marien Quarter by Andreas Esser

The city goverment decided to develope the areal between TV Tower and Humboldtforum after 2030. First they want a public discussion about the future and on the other side they want to develope first the Molkenmarkt behind the cityhall.

The User libero ( Andreas Eßer, Organisation: www.2bd1.org) created a draft for the area I want to share here. I got his permission but:

He is looking for support for his work (architects, etc.), if you are interested.

More about the Marx-Engels Forum here.

First of all, I hope they drop the name 'Marx-Engels'. This name is an insult to the peaceful revolution of 1989 and should have no place in a democratic society.

As for the redevelopment, I think everything is better than the current situation.

Skyscrapers are planed behind the TV Tower and behind the railway line.

Here the old Kollhoff Masterplan. Monarch Group and Hines want to start building the first two 150m Highrises. They call it "city cap" around the TV Tower.

I would at least reconstruct the cornerbuildings of the molkenmarkt.

Why leave it like it is? Reconstructions arent that realistic, there can be also a modern interpretation.

Which cornerbuildings? You mean the cornerbuildings at the Marx-Engels-Forum next to the Spree?

On the left side we allready have a new building, I think they wouldnt tear it down for the next 20-30 years, but maybe the otherone.

If the citygoverment of Berlin makes that ground to building-ground, old proprietors can make a claim to them.

I was in Berlin about one year ago and i think that the "empty" space around the Fernsehturm and Aleksanderplatz doesn't look so bad, also because it's a caracteristic of the DDR times. In my personal opinion it deserve only a refurbishment and a general clean.

Still, it virtually is the heart of the city. Its historical center, the root for all of the city's development. It just feels wrong to leave it all empty and it doesn't make sense. Berlin-Mitte is full of parks and free space anyway, this place will still retain enough spaces if built-up. It needs to be urbanized, period.

This is my favourite plan, though I'd like to see some more space left for a solitary base of the Fernsehturm/TV Tower, so it remains a free standing structure comparable to the CN or Eiffel Tower:

It absolutely needs to be urbanized, it is the historical hart of Berlin. The plan of Spree Albers is more truthful to the historical street pattern than other plans.

This is a cut out from a inner city map from berlin in 1910.

Yeah... I know that is the city center and so on, but i think that this location rapresent a certain period that has changed an entire nation. And should be preserved. Just like the wall. But i know thats only the point of view of a tourist.
