Do any of you know about the November 2013 rumour that Deutsche Bahn would be closing the Munich Nord marshalling yard?

I just can't see this happening, not a 100 per cent closure at least.

This is the story I've read: http://www.tz.de/muenchen/stadt/alla...ht-476393.html

That marshalling yard has been constructed finally in 1990. It has not been constructed to its full possible capacity. Nonetheless it is till today not used for its full actual capacity (in fact less than 30%).

Beyond that there are some more general considerations to replace marshalling capacity from munich to nuremberg.

For this marshalling yard a huge and very precious biotop has been destroyed and the yard is a barrier between quarters which naturally belong together. Before final construction many people predicted that this yard will not be needed - now it is evident.

Does anyone know if Munich have any plans of reconstructing or simply build in an old style somewhere like e.g. in Dresden? I hope so. At least in the inner core.

In fact neither Berlin nor Hamburg are able to connect creativity and success to a "real deal" like Munich.

However it is strange to see, how Munich currently fails to find it own unique and pleasant way of architecture and city development and got stucked in the 90ies.
Munich is known to be both more conservative (politically) and more progressive (economically) than big, northern german cities. This would rhyme with an american value set to some degree (even gun-ownership is higher in Bavaria). However, Munich as a southern german city is more catholic than northern, german cities. Thus, at least within germany itself (if not continent wide), Webers philosophy on the protestant-capitalist link appears failing.

Munich is also said to have a higher degree of regional patriotism than the more open / cosmopolitan Berlin or Hamburg. if this is true, I don´t know, however. Maybe they only play on regional culture to earn money, as when they draw thousands to their city for october-fest every year.

To talk of the "big four" or "three big" cities of germany appears meaningless to me. As a metropolitan centre, Munich is merely the fifth largest, as far as I know. Both the Ruhr and the greater Frankfurt areas are bigger.

As to the projects presented - not only are they butt-ugly, a couple of those you posted have already been scraped, are just a vague idea, or have been significantly altered to be even uglier (Schwabinger Tor for example). It's just so sad... Thanks Mr. Kronawitter!
An acquaintance of mine living in M told me that the Münchener themselves are displeased with most new developments of the city. He said most new urban architecture looks like sterile "hospital-architecture".

I myself was mostly just in the city centre, which is off course mostly unchanged and very nice.

You mean why they only build sterile looking "hospital architecture"? I really don´t know. Maybe they´re so business oriented that aesthetics are not important. After all, it doesn´t contribute to account surplusses.
