I personally find the parking lot + subway terminal rather aesthetically unappealing, but necessary nonetheless.
The so called cacti garden always was planned as the roof of the short term parking facility. In the final design that parking facility still has a green roof but shows a different pattern.

September Update
< - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - >

Not much to see still but the cleanup and leveling works on site continue.

The main water pump line is already operational.

The temporary offices for contractors and officials are almost finished.

We are still about a year away from seeing actual structures go up. First quarter next year we should be seeing the runways pre-load system being put in place, so the shape of the airport complex will be better defined.

Video in spanish, but it details the progress on all 6 work fronts currently under way. Essentially:

1) Surrounding wall and road. The wall is 4.5 mts tall with solar lamps and the road is 10mts wide. Currently at 22km long of 33km, and due to be finished on December 2016.

2) Drainage. Includes 11.3km of open air channels, 9.3km of pipelines, and 3 pumping plants. Also due December 2016.

3) Temporary Offices. 7,500sqm of office space for over 250 people. Plus dinning hall, and sanitary and recreational services for workers. Due October 2016.

4) Leveling and cleanup. Work due April 2017.

5) Debris removal. Would remove over 3 million cubic meters of debris, and due to wrap up on October 2016.

6) Temporary roadways. There will be 48km of temporary access roads. Due April 2017.

Runways 2 and 3 along with taxiways will start work soon. The 90m tall control tower and the 700,000 sqm terminal building are in the middle of the tender process and should be awarded before the end of the year so that works can begin as soon as January next year.

Call for Tender for the Airport Control Tower has been launched

The Call for Tender for the Airport Traffic Control Tower has just been released Yesterday on the Mexican Government e-procurement website (Compranet).

In August, the government announced the tender's pre-bases at international level in order to gain attention of the most experienced bidders.

At 90m high, the control tower will be one of the tallest in Latin America.

More information (in Spanish).

Some more pictures taken by me Today (12 Dec). Day by day, the progress on the works makes the Terminal's shape more clear:

.. This one was taken from farther away so the scale of the airport plot is more evident. Once finished, it will undoubtedly be one of the biggest in the World:

cheers

Winner of the contract to build the Airport's Terminal has been announced

A Mexican-Spanish consortium has clinched the Airport's terminal project. It will cost US$4 Billion.

A consortium including a construction company controlled by billionaire Carlos Slim has clinched the terminal project at Mexico City's new $13 billion airport, Mexican officials said on Friday.

The construction arm of Slim's Grupo Carso and his majority-owned FCC submitted a bid of 84.8 billion Mexican pesos ($3.98 billion) for the project, which is due to be completed in 2020.

The consortium also includes Spain's Acciona and Mexican firms ICA, Constructora Y Edificadora GIA+A (GIA), Promotora y Desarrolladora Mexicana (Prodemex), and the construction unit of Grupo Hermes.

More information.

According to an insider and SSC forumer, afrmx, contract will be concluded within the next 30 days. Works should start next month, on 13 Feb and last 1,346 days so the project should be finished by 20 October 2020.

I take it the completion date for the initial opening of the new airport will be sometime in the early 2020s?
