Just since 1990, several thousand people have being killed as a direct result of poor infrastructure and bad security standards in and around the mosque. It's shameful that the authorities have taken so long to react (they only redesigned certain locations after stampedes there had occurred 3-4 times). It's not as if they don't have the money.
thank you, this was really informative, i was always mesmerized by the amount of people and was baffed how it never came to any stampedes, this brought me back to reality. it just didn't happen in the most recent history pretty much.

My personal condolences to the families of the victims involved in this horrific incident. I pray those who passed away are granted Jannah al-Firdaws and that they are at peace with our immortal Beloved salAllāhu 'aleyhi wa sallam. Also my duā's extend out to those who were injured or affected by this incident. I pray Allāh grants them the best of health, wealth and imān. Ameen.

Back to the topic of this thread; I've been seeing pictures on other threads of what I think may be the foundations for the minaret on the North-Western side of the haram:

Bottom centre of this photo (just about!):

And bottom right corner of this photo where the yellow crane is:

What do you guys think?

I'm not asking this to be a dick, but what does this mean? I get that it's a prayer, but for the ignorant, could you explain? Thanks!

Go look at stadium construction

There are many tower cranes in them. This construction is at a giant stadium level.

I guess other events have distracted people from the main thread here, which is 2 x 420m Minarets at the end of the Fourth extension to the Grand Mosque (Masjide Haram), see Page 12 post #226 (but ignore the 3rd Minaret in that picture which has not yet been approved).

The link you show asking 'This is abandoned' is the massive Clock Tower over looking the Grand Mosque, which is completed.

Hope that helps.

Are the minarets approved? Is there 2 minarets or 3?

Agreed, so much money and so little taste. It's lacking any sensitivity with the developments looking crude and obnoxious within context. Bigger is not always better especially in historical contexts.

This to me looks more themed Disneyland than sacred holy site. The buildings are so incongruous they might as well of built a theme park or a shanghai like CBD cluster. The massing, bulk and sheer scale simply overwhelms everything. There are ways this could have been approached with equivalent floorspaces in a much more compatible and sensitive manner.

So if the thread is back to the first page, following question appears: Is there any information about the status of the construction? Maybe some new photos?

Looking at these latest photos, looks like you're right when comparing the middle photo to the side and aerial views

The size of this mosque and the amount of people inside is just scary to look at..
