Mecca is or was one of the most historic cities on the planet, and the Saudi government has completely annihilated the entire historic core of the city. Pretty disgusting.

That place gets annihilated every 20 years or so... the only thing that they annihilated that was historically worth keeping was that sand castle (now the clock tower).. but then again.. not a lot of people care... it wasn't pretty

No s***. The wahabi sect is the sworn enemy of history, and history is the sworn enemy of the wahabi.

I wouldnt call an 18th century Ottoman Citadel a mere sand castle. And destroying some of the first Islamic mosques and the house where Mohammad was born and houses of some of the first adherents to one of the worlds major religions is pretty abhorent. I dont like religion, in fact, I think its horrible but destroying pieces of history that important should be viewed as nothing more than the destruction of some of humanities collective history. It would be like the Jewish government tearing down the old City of Jerusalem, unimaginable. Or the Italian government plowing over the Roman Forum. These places belong to humanity, not one country.

Once the oooh and aaah's on this construction boom died down people will probably scratch their heads why on earth they've deleted such a historic site for the pile of kitsch which took its place.

You will be hard-pressed to see any head-scratching, even in five centuries' time, by the gung-ho supporters of the fake "muslim" regimes. One would have thought architecture is an important expression of culture... well, sometimes it is. Cilindr0: I don't see how describing reality can be defined as "hating". Is your own signature "hating" as well, then?

I love skyscrapers, I think they are awesome, but I wouldnt want to see supertall skyscrapers built on top of any major historic site, they can be built elsewhere or built in ways that dont damage the heritage of the area.

I'm now in Malacca and had the Malaysian government been like those running Saudi Arabia, the historical core of this city (where A Famosa, Jonker Walk, and the Stadthuys are located) would have been flattened a long time ago... And replaced by some kitschy mall or ugly thin tower blocks!
