Obviously, only time will tell.

Renders never actually show how a building will eventually look and this is due to technicalities faced during construction, unknowns. Sometimes, plans have to even be changed!

The space for the minaret does look very small and as though it will be right next to that hotel.

I don't think they should be building hotels that close to the Haram anyway, as the future may mean they have to knock them down again! It's always been a very crowded city

The second render is the more realistic and updated one (in my eyes anyway). The hotel wouldn't need to be destroyed but the minaret would be too (dangerously?) close to it.

It is a thin structure but bear in mind, they're still in very early stages of the construction of the facilities area which is at the rear of the new expansion

And apparently the Abraj al-Bait has a 20 year lease before they knock it down!

Why are they making the center of this place so messy? The ritual looked so powerful with that vortex of people swirling around the black cube...

Which is how it look once all this work is complete (in a few years) as they're going to remove the temporary mataaf and open the inner courtyard once again to worshippers. This time however, there will more levels on the inner masjid to perform tawaf and more space on the roof.

Anyway, back on topic. I hope we see evidence of the giant minarets coming into existence soon. Whenever new pictures are uploaded, I always have my eye on the back left of the new expansion to see any sign of a small square foundation!

Distractions will always be there, your point-of-view is determined by what intention lies in your heart...

I am not Muslim, but I really want to say that those giant skyscrapers in Mecca are an insult to Islam's most important place.

It is exactly like if you build a Christian-cross shaped skyscraper in Roma, or a 600m-tall hotel shaped like a fake church.

Those buildings should be in Las Vegas, not in a religious city. Religious cities are what they are, because they are ancient and people can feel the history of religion in those cities.

Those minarets and this Royal clock tower are not ugly, but they shouldn't be there.

And, as described in the story of the tower of Babel, being closer to God doesn't imply building tall towers.
