NEW YORK | NoMad Tower | +200m | +656ft | 55 fl | Prep

Demo work on the beautiful Bancroft building was proceeding today. The building that will be demolished on the 30th St. side will not be missed. Although Bancroft is nice, it is "a dime a dozen" in this area. Thus, if HFZ decides to go over 850', which they can easily do with their 350,000 sf in air rights, I'll be pleased. JD Carlisle is building to 825' down the street.

Here's the YIMBY article from February: http://newyorkyimby.com/2014/02/demo...th-street.html

Quote:
The green fencing of doom has risen around the base of 3 West 29th Street, which will be torn down to make way for a mixed-use development by HFZ Capital. The Real Deal reported on the building’s impending demolition last week, which will vanish along with adjacent structures at 11 West 29th Street and 8 West 30th Street.

[...]

Plans for the future development are vague, though a massing diagram — via Curbed — outlines the site’s potential. With air rights totaling 350,000 square feet, the replacement will likely make a mark on the skyline.

Given NoMAD’s surging profile and cache, it is entirely possible that HFZ’s development will be aesthetically superior to The Bancroft Building; progress is not possible without sacrifice. The neighborhood is no stranger to change, and even The Empire State Building — located four blocks to the north — came at the cost of the old Waldorf Astoria.

As for this site yielding a skyscraper, while probable, that's way too speculative for now. I'll take this thread down to Highrises.

With 350k sf, this could be pretty tall.

This is a sad loss, IMO. There are plenty of other worthy development sites in this neighborhood. This is coming from someone who is very pro-development...

Bancroft isn't really a 'dime a dozen' (not to mention quite old for a building that size). It makes me cringe. Whatever they build has to be top notch to make up for it.

That is a shame but agree this can be pretty tall like that latest 800' + proposal at 30th street.

If we get similar height for this proposal, I could stomach it. If a nice design on top of the height, I will forget about this building being razed.

Curbed says that this will be replacing it.

It currently looks like this...

I took This photo yesterday. HFZ is demolishing the old brown building and the little white one, both of which are on the 30th St side of the site.

How can they destroy such a building....
The USA has almost no historic heritage and they are destroying the few they have...
I just can't understand !

I lament the loss of this tower, but if you consider buildings from the 1800s historic, NY has thousands.

Compared to my original home in the Middle East, however, Ametica and Europe are new.

This $#!+ is over the top. If an American is looking to make a profit... It's dollars that they are after. Not shekels.. If one were to imply that they are greedy... they want solid U.S. Currency. GREENBACKS

OMG does nobody understand that like 90% of NY's historic towers and midrises are landmarked? You should be happy they haven't demolished more of them by now, since the city is on an island.

Wow, sounds promising! I hope this is a prominent tower on the skyline.
