Could This Honeycomb Tower Be Moshe Safdie’s Bancroft Building Replacement?

Could This Honeycomb Tower Be Moshe Safdie’s Bancroft Building Replacement?

Quote:
The rendered skyscraper appears to align with a block-through development site near the corner of West 29th Street and Fifth Avenue that has been assembled by Ziel Feldman’s HFZ Development. That site was purchased from the Collegiate Churches of New York in 2013 and was partially occupied by the striped brick and limestone

Not a worthy replacement, imo.

I hope this isn't anything final though it is still very early and it is likely to be re-designed. I would like to see something a lot more classy than this. Not necessarily limestone but a glass tower could work here, something like KPF's 111 Murray or the tower down by MetLife.

The first half of the video shows the rubble lot that remains from Bancroft and the backside of 8-16 West 30th Street, which awaits demolition, while the second half shows the front facade of 8-16 West 30th Street

Moshe Safdie Designing 60-Story Mixed-Use Tower At 8 West 30th Street, NoMad

Quote:
the New York Post has revealed what HFZ Capital has planned for the development assemblage. A 64-story, 800-foot-tall mixed-use tower is planned on the 30th Street side, where a 12-story commercial building has yet to be demolished at 8-16 West 30th Street. The neighboring Marble Collegiate Church is also in on the project, and will operate offices in the skyscraper’s limestone-clad base. A small plaza is also rendered on the 29th Street side, immediately adjacent to the church. Moshe Safdie is designing, and the project reportedly requires approval from the LPC.
New luxury condo is latest to liven Midtown’s NoMad district

Quote:
[...]
The latest is a new luxury condominium tower designed by Moshe Safdie that could soon rise mid-block between West 29th and West 30th streets on land just west of, and adjacent to, Marble Collegiate Church.
The nearly 800-foot-tall, 64-story tower will be developed by Ziel Feldman’s HFZ Capital in conjunction with the church, a landmark that was built in 1854. The three church-owned properties — since demolished — were contributed to the joint venture.
[...]
The reflective glass skyscraper will have numerous outcroppings designed for interior space as well as shade. The limestone base will host church offices and blend into the historic neighborhood as well as the color of the landmark church.
A tree-filled public park designed by HW White is planned for a setback along West 29th Street next to the church, while the new tower is planned for West 30th Street. Its name and formal address haven’t yet been announced.

Ugly, uninspired design. PTAC units. And it obstructs views of the ESB. I'm surprised there isn't more outrage about this.

Agreed. I'm all about development especially in that area of the city which has so much potential, but to have this thing blocking the ESB from one of its best angles isn't worth it.
But you won't see NIMBYs complaining about that, that's not the UES, CPS or one of those downtown neighborhoods.

ESB views?!..what's the point?..it's a office building not the Grand Canyon Skywalk!
Also, imo, the design is very interesting and i am pretty confident as Moshe Safdie never disappointed me.(in beautiful L A he designed a pure masterpiece:the Skirball Cultural Center)

I think the main concern of most people is not the views from the ESB to downtown, but the view from downtown towards ESB. For more than 80 years people are used to see the ESB's southern facade with Midtown in the back.

Given this tower, the Hudson Yards buildings and all the Billionaire towers near Central Park, the only view of the Empire State Building that will be mostly preserved will be from the East River but given the amount of construction activity and proposals, even that isn't guaranteed.

I remember how controversial 15 Penn was in regards to blocking out the ESB but the owner's argument about preserving the views has become even more invalid considering what's been going on in that particular neighborhood. Whether or not 15 Penn gets built (it's still up in the air at this point and who knows when they'll decide what to do with the site) is irrelevant but it will always be known as the first Midtown proposal to dare challenge the ESB's (still as of now) dominance and this is no different.

I love the ESB and it will always be a NYC icon but I suppose it was inevitable that this would happen.
