Bjarke Ingels to Design Office Tower in Lieu of Condos for HFZ's NoMad Site

Bjarke Ingels to Design Office Tower in Lieu of Condos for HFZ's NoMad Site
Thursday, September 28, 2017

Quote:
Five years ago, no one would have believed that NoMad would be an epicenter of Manhattan’s never-ending skyscraper boom. Today,
the mid-rise neighborhood at the Empire State Building’s toes has joined
Hudson Yards and Billionaires’ Row as fertile ground for sky-high
supertalls. Six towering projects are now underway all jostling for their
own slice of sky to endow their occupants with commanding views over the
island.

It will block less of ESB, so that's something?

I’m glad the previous design was dropped but hearing Ingels is designing this tower makes me very uneasy. We could get a masterpiece or something very, very bad.

Ever since One Madison blocked the Metropolitan Life Clock tower from downtown i've been more or less desensitized to views being blocked from that angle. However, Safde's tower would not have completely obscured the ESB and it was a good design, not to mention tall. We needed something to reduce the impact of the eyesoar supertall at 262 Fifth and now we won't have it.
I really hope BIG will cook up something respectful to the neighborhood and the ESB. IMO he doesn't have a good track record at contextual design, opting for a "look at me" approach with his works.

That original concept from FR-EE actually looks uncannily like something BIG might come up with.

From the Yimby article from 2014.

Could do worse.

Destroying a beautiful old building for what could potentially be a boring boxy BIG tower is disgusting. Just like what happened on 57th street, NY continues to knock down its old beautiful buildings with no measures taken to preserve the facades by the greedy smug philistine developers.
