As part of a wider growth plan for transport in Perth, including freight, bicycle and road transport, there is a plan for Perth Public Transport to the year 2050 or a population of about 3.5m, which is almost doubled Perths current population of 2.2m.

The draft was released last July, but an updated 'final' plan has been released today, on the same day as the next State Government Election is announced for 6 weeks time.

Overall plan details

Although rail and tram are usually featured as the "glamour" elements of city transit, it's worth noting that Perth has the best urban bus system in Australia, on a level with some of the best European systems.

Perth's public transport is based on modal interchange rather than "single-seat" journeys to every origin and destination and it has excellent interchange facilities between trains, buses and car-parking, as for example Aubin Grove featured above. The bus services are quite dense and frequent, with easy interchange and excellent accessibility. As long as they still have the capacity, they do a better job than any tram system in Australia (except maybe Gold Coast) and any proposals for tram lines are still in the future. The first such proposal still in the planning stage is for a line connecting University of Western Australia with Curtin University and Canning Bridge via the Perth CBD, approximately as shown in this diagram:

An important component of the Perth bus system is the Central Area Transit (CAT) buses which are free buses providing circulator services in the downtown areas of Perth, the port of Fremantle and the suburb of Joondalup. Here is a map of the services in the Perth central city area:

http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/port...map_2013-2.pdf

And here is a new video showing CAT buses in operation in this area. The scenes are filmed, first, in Wellington Street outside Perth Railway Station, then in Railway Parade at Sutherland Street:

Approximately 83 million people per annum use buses in Perth and 65 million people per annum use trains. Patronage of both modes has had by far the greatest growth of any city in Australia. The modernised public transport system has made a considerable impact in what was formerly the most car-dependent city in Australia.

This looks like it will be south of the control tower quite a long way from the termini. Will there be an underground walkway to get to the terminals under shelter?

In relation to the last photo, where will the new domestic terminals be?
