Thanks wjfox2002! It's really the best museum in the world - and I have been to hundreds First in the discussion it has been mentioned by a lot of people and now hardly doesn't get any votes... sad! It's better than Uffizi, Vaticani or the British Museum (though this one is tight)

The Natural History Museum is better looking than the British Museum, but the British Museum has the largest collection of artifacts on the planet from every corner on the planet.

However - one thing that many people don't notice with the Natural History Museum, is the actual detail put into the designing of the building - look carefully at the arches and pillars in the following picture:

You may have noticed the "monkeys" all uniquely designed to mimic as as if the actual museum was frozen in time with the creatures still atached to the walls. The staircases are designed with fish inplanted into the hand rails, herons line corridor walls, seats designed with mammals intertwinned.

The actual stonework is also meant to resemble the sedimentary layers of compacted rock - as if the museum rose from the ground like a magnificant volcano! Even though it aint winning, and as is the BM (which has by far the most impressive collection here), its great that London has this collection of museums that are at our fingertips. Also the fact that all of the museums are free is an added bonus which far too many people do not take into account.

the british museum has a better range of artifacts. the louvre has a nice painting collection but its very rivalled by the national gallery in london. the natural history museum is the most stunning museum architecture around though... look at it. photos fail to communicate the sheer size of it because its too big to photograph!

Yea I love London's museums. I can visit them over and over again because they're free but also there is so much to see that you don't get to see it in one go.

My choice:

British Museum
Natural History Museum
and Louvre.

None of the above. I like the Prado the best, but then again I think that this is because I like Spanish art the best.

the Louvre all the way... best museum in the world, hands down! ... not only for the architecture but for what's stored inside too, from the paintings to the sculptures... (and, why not, for I.M. Pei's glass pyramids too...)

This is kind of rediculous. The Metropolita Museum of Art in NYC should definately be in the Top 5!

It's funny. London got on this list twice, and they still got their ass beat by Paris. That has to be like the fifth time this week. Sorry, London, there's just no fighting the Louvre, it kicks ass.

But the Louvre is both a museum and an art gallery. London has the British Museum and the National Gallery.

So far I can only count four definite North American forumers, and that includes Naptown, who started the thread and doesn't include me. It seems strange that no North American museums were included. I submitted some. What about the ROM and the Ontario Science Center in Toronto, the Casa de Belles Artes in Mexico City, or the Met in NYC? Either very few North American forumers submitted museums or European forumers are clueless about what awesome museums there are outside of the UK, France and Italy.
