Well here is the map of metro from urbanrail.net:

It's not exactly metro - it's premetro network, combination of light rail and rapid transit. In the 70's city planned to build 52 km and 69 stations by 90s. But some parts of network aren't or weren't built for long time. Recent M3 line opening in 2013 was part of original plan. Here is the map with track plan:

Right now metro has 35 km of tracks, 22 full metro stations, of which 12 are underground. Some pictures from Wikipedia - Ouest station:

Beaux-Arts station:

Waterloo station:

De Cartier station:

Providence station:

Tram at Madeleine station:

Poor for Belgian standard.

This is De Cartier station in Marchiennes-au-Pont, one of the poorest and most industrialized part of Charleroi. It's an underground station located in a popular area but just in front of the De Cartier castle, they used old bricks and stones from the castle's stables to decorate it. The reason why it's tilted is (I guess) a crappy idea from the architect. Modernization of the station is planned in 2015.

Here is Château de Cartier and the station, I'll try to post some other pix later.

The richest part is the southern suburb but there is no metro there. Here are some more pictures. The TEC had a website with recent pictures of all stations on the network but it's down

There were two east extensions: one going to Soleilmont (working) and another one going to Châtelet (half of this one is built but still ouf of use; it's the so-called "ghost metro")

Charleroi is a fine city. I had a bad experience there once at about 7AM on a Saturday morning, at which time there is nobody about. But go out at any time when other people are around and it's as safe and pleasant as anywhere. After my bad experience (which only amounted to the loss of a few euros in the end, I managed to get my wallet back off the guy!) I was quite impressed by how local people were willing to help.

While I was there I travelled out to Anderlues, which is an absolutely lovely stretch of classic SNCV tramway and a very pleasant village/town to visit. I highly recommend riding what is really the only original bit of SNCV track left in Belgium.

One important warning for people though. It is really quite difficult to buy your tickets for the Chaleroi Metro. Most of the stations didn't have any kind of automatic ticket machines when I was there and there is next to no staff presence anywhere on the system. Buy your day ticket at South Station.

If anyone has any information on the possible extension to Chatelet I would love to have an update on that.

Here's one of my photos of a tram at Anderlues from my Flickr page: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mk_tom/8877821417

On the other hand, that line is really suburban. So i would say, go for it only if you are interested into these vicinal tracks.

TEC has installed a lot of ticket machines lately, every renovated station has some for sure.

Still nothing concrete coming. However, the planned centralization of several healthcare facilities of Charleroi into a mega hospital near the Châtelet-line could give a boost to the rehabilitation of this track.
