List of new train stations for London
A few notes - this a list of all stations/interchange stations u/c, proposed or approved within the Greater London Authority area. It does not include stations within the total urban area of London, or its metro area. I have split the stations among four groups for practical reasons. Green indicates stations currently under construction, while red indicates new interchange stations under construction.
What is an interchange station you may ask? Well if we take the Channel Tunnel Rail Link as an example, it might clarify matters. With the CTRL (a HSR TGV/ICE/Shinkansen speed line), there are 2 stations within Greater London. One at Stratford (called Stratford International) and another at London St Pancras. Now Stratford International is a totally new station seperate from any other interchange services at and around Stratford (infact a proposed DLR line would infact connect Stratford rail hub and Stratford International). London St Pancras on the otherhand has been around for 148 years (when CTRL is fully complete in 2007, St Pancras will be celebrating its 150th anniversary!), serving commuter, suburban, metro and national rail. As well as various tube lines. The actual Eurostar trains are going into the old station, but a 200m+ extension is being built, as well as a new London Underground ticket hall and a massive clean up of the old station (visable in my CTRL threads). Thus even though more platforms and massive redevelopment works are taking place at London St Pancras, it is still effectively just a very large upgrade or as I call: a new interchange station creation/addition. The same goes for Crossrail - a line that will be built along song current tracks (apart for a whole new tunnel between London Paddington and London Stratford and Isle of Dogs). All stations along the current route will be revamped and expanded with new platforms serving "new lines". I thus consider them to be dramatic improvements, but not such a change in the form of new platforms and lines. Proposed and approved new stations are whole new stations, eg Imperial Wharf at the Imperial Wharf. Some include the opening of very old disused stations, eg York Road on the Piccadilly line - closed in 1930, but could be rebuilt without much trouble. The last colour is identical to the new interchange station creation/addition list.....but the interchanges are either approved or proposed for the near future. So without much to do - enjoy at what is the 2nd largest rail network on the planet and still rapidly growing! Amazing network. I thoroughly enjoyed using it numerous times.
I guess most of these new stations will be in the outer areas which emerge above ground once they are further out from the inner city? |

A good few will be in the inner areas, but the vast majority will be in the outer boroughs which are getting denser (population is expected to hit 8mn soon from the 2001 count of 7.1mn). What will happen in the core (ie within the Circle line), will be more lines to relieve lines. So no new stations within the core, but connecting up with existing stations - ie with Crossrail the new lines will only connect in the core of London: London Paddington - Bond St - Tottenham Court Road - Farringdon - Moorgate - London Liverpool Street - in other words it will be London's 2nd RER type line through London (the first being Thameslink) and more interchange stations.
There are other plans for another Crossrail system: Crossrail 2: London Victoria - London Kings Cross. Crossrail 3 is another RER type project undergoing consultation which will link London Waterloo - London Euston. There could also be the possibility of more Crossrail (RER's) in the near future linking the outer suburbs and going through the central rail termini (London has 13, compared to the 2 in New York for instance). |

Nick - what's the 'South White City' station on the Central line? I assume it's something to do with the retail development. I also note that there is a new station planned on the Hammersmith & City line at White City and a new Shepherd's Bush station on the mainline.
What will the public transport map look like in that area when these plans are finished? Would be grateful if you could try to rationalise it. And will there be a proper Central/Hammersmith & City line interchange? |

I am not totally sure of all the designs of the stations or the connections involved, but I believe there will be a proper Central/Hammersmith & City interhchange for the new White City development.
