Think I know what he means. Chicago is taking a beating in the press of late.

It should be stated that the Gensler design is just a design exercise not a proposal

This thing is the same height as the Spire so I'm happy.

Are there two threads for the same project?

This was started in megatalls as a new thread, the other is the ex-Related Midwest Towers thread that was renamed and moved here. Since both managed to be active almost simultanously, a merger should lead to something nicely confusing.

I may be one of the few, but I like this better than the Spire. The Spire looked a lot like a screw lying on the ground ready to poke a hole on the soles of your shoes. Hehe.

On the upside, Chicago is more likely than any other city in North America except NYC to actually follow through with something in the mega-tall category. Go Chicago!

Agreed re: the Megatall comment. Can't see any city outside of NYC having the population / skyline / demand for such save Chicago.

I see a megatall being built in Chicago more likely than New York

I'm not sure if I like the old Chicago Spire design or this one.

My problem with the old design - I know, my mind is in the gutter - is that it looked like a giant vibrator!!!

You're not alone. The term I thought best described it was "drilldo." Suffice it to say, I really disliked the Calatrava design. I would love a megatall to rise on that site someday, but I'm frankly glad that thing got scrapped.

Not sure what to think of this Gensler concept -- the bracing is nice, if a little obvious, and I really could do without the strut at the base -- but as has been and should be repeated, it's just a vision from an internal design contest, so probably doesn't deserve all that much critical thought.

So is it not an actual project then?

No it's not. It's just a vision for the site. Architectural firms do this sort of thing a lot for high profile locations. I think the idea is that they can get some publicity and perhaps attract the developer for the site whenever that developer goes looking for an architect for the site.

The project status should be updated to reflect reality because right now people are being misled into thinking this is a serious proposal.
