I love this project, just wish the buildings were closer together. Seems like it would be better for the environment that way!

such a shame projects all of them
these project built by korean people's $ 100 billions tax investment on these building
all of important ministry n public company must concentrated on seoul
also korea must prepare Unification era i.e pyoungyang located in upper of peninsular and seoul located below and closed each other

but suddenly Opposite party and some greedy land owner of rural begin national project to Scatter all major facilities in seoul to every corner of korea peninsular($ 100 billions spent this project).

These cities came from One man's greed who want to become president of korea. He become president

Icon of populism such a shame!

Inno, you're a smart guy; I don't know why you don't see how South Korea being so Seoul-centric could be a bad thing.

What about people in all the other cities and provinces? Should they all move to Seoul, too? A country so strongly based around one city will be less innovative, less productive, and ultimately less happy as too many people try to live in one space and compete for all the same things. Really, that's one of the main problems with South Korea now--one form of education (cram schools and hagwons), one form of economic success (chaebol and government jobs), and one form of government (Saenuri). I don't need to tell you again why having such a narrow social structure is bad.

It's also a defensive weakness. Right now, if Seoul were to be bombed by North Korea, South Korea would be basically dead in the water. Half of South Korea's population and GDP live in Sudogwon; to lose the city to a Northern attack would basically mean the end of South Korea as we've all come to know and love. By distributing some of the country's facilities to places outside of Seoul, the city becomes less important to national functioning, and therefore less of a weak spot.

South Korea really does need these kinds of geographic redistributions, as everyone and everything really does want to be in Seoul. Seoul is already a great, world-class city on par with Tokyo, London, New York, and Paris, and the ways in which it falls short won't be helped by further monetary investments.

By contrast, I'd understand more if you were angry that these types of developments are happening either outside of other major cities or in small towns in the middle nowhere. I don't know why they don't put this kind of money into the downtowns of places like Gwangju, Daejeon, or even smaller cities like Wonju, Chuncheon, Suncheon, or Mokpo. It's bad for the environment, and means that those cities are missing out on a new source of people, and vice versa.

WELL
U and I city philosophy is different
I think city's growth follow Fractal structure. Let it be then it grow by herself No need artificial to cut tress's branch
I have tremendous data and I know political behind story about this populism project.
But I quit argue
cause this thread about korea's project.
If i continue argue then this thread become pointless thread. that is not good for SSC

P.S
Spread facilities? Now korean population reduce seriously. japan's tremendous debt due to such a populism construction in rural too.
furthermore we must prepare Unification with NKOREA. where we choose Capital of Unification korea? then we relocated these facilities into New capital again? Look Germany's unification case they suffer Two capital problem(bon n berlin)!

this moving project begin not because defensive issue(0%)
But One politician man(who commit suicide)begin this project for get vote from rural people. So korea spent $100 billions for these project. now Public officer who stay in saejoung city commute to seoul(spent 4~5 hours a day). Very inefficiency
too expensive cost to endure korean..one politician and rural land/house owner people compromise this useless project.

Yes, I agree, it's not ideal, but allowing a city to grow as it does naturally is not always what's best for it. Roh Moo-hyun was definitely right to try and overcome regionalism in South Korea.

For such a small country, it's kind of sad that there are still regional dialects and biases. Seoul and Yeongnam shouldn't be the only parts of the country to benefit from government preference, and you're right that these projects aren't perfect--I really think it's a sin that they're not being used to directly enrich South Korea's other big cities--but that doesn't mean that diverting some money and focus from Seoul is itself a bad thing.

If people are doing long commutes to Sejong, that only shows that Sejong was, itself, a bad idea, and that if they'd put the money say, directly into Daejeon, maybe people would just live in Daejeon, instead of commuting there from Seoul to avoid having to live in the middle of a field like Sejong is.

And even if this move wasn't being done specifically for defensive reasons, there are defensive reasons for doing it, anyway.

Seoul is the only city in South Korea that most people have any idea about, and that's a disservice to the entire country.

One of the most interesting threads I've read in a long time - absolutely fascinating.

If anybody wants to see Sejong City on Google Earth, search this location: 36°30'51.02" N 127°15'21.84" E
