Interesting move Ryanair entering the Amsterdam market alongside also adding flights into Brussels National (BRU) and Rome (FCO). It's clear Ryanair's approach of serving secondary airports has changed.

Any official news or rumours on what routes Ryanair will operate from Amsterdam?

Schiphol has a perfect terminal for Ryanair the Lowcost H-pier. Last week Schiphol announced that their didn't receive any request from Ryanair yet. When the low cost terminal opened in 2005, Schiphol expected that Ryanair was coming to Amsterdam, but instead Ryanair chose for Eindhoven. Now the lowcost terminal is mainly use by Easyjet and other lowcost carriers.

easyJet announces new route between London Gatwick and Tel Aviv

easyJet has today announced that it plans a third route between the UK and Tel Aviv. The airline, which already flies to the city from Manchester Airport and London Luton Airport, will start services from London Gatwick Airport from 1 April 2014. The thrice weekly flights, which will go on sale on 10 December, will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays with fares starting from £90.49*

Hugh Aitken, UK Commercial Manager for easyJet, commented:
"easyJet is delighted to be able to offer new services to Tel Aviv from a third airport in the UK. We expect to carry around 50,000 passengers each year on the new Gatwick service. Combined with our flights from London Luton and Manchester this means we will operate 16 weekly flights to Tel Aviv from the UK.

“Our research, in conjunction with the Jewish News, has helped us better understand why passengers choose Tel Aviv and informed us about what they enjoyed about their trip. The most striking finding was the destination’s growing popularity with young travellers who viewed it as a relaxing, beach destination to visit.

“One of the reasons for launching new flights from London Gatwick is because Tel Aviv’s appeal as a popular leisure destination has been growing. Almost 100,000 passengers travelled from both London Luton and Manchester with easyJet in the past year."

easyJet started flying to Tel Aviv in November 2009 from London Luton Airport. Across Europe the airline currently serves Tel Aviv from London Luton and Manchester as well as Basel, Geneva and Rome.

The airline has recently announced a Berlin – Tel Aviv route which is the first since the signing of the Open skies agreement between the EU and Israel. In the past twelve months easyJet has flown more than 330,000 passengers into and out of Tel Aviv, 190,000 of those flew to and from the UK and next year this is set to increase further.

easyJet has also increased its flights between Manchester and Tel Aviv from two to three per week between 17 Feb 2014 and 28 April 2014.

easyJet today announces a one third increase in capacity to and from Rome Fiumicino airport

From Spring 2014, easyJet will be launching a number of new routes from Rome Fiumicino airport including Prague, Nantes, Menorca (Mahon) and Rhodes and adding extra flights to and from a number of destinations.

The announcement is a further demonstration of easyJet's commitment to Italy and follows the launch of a new easyJet base in Naples (easyJet's third base in Italy) from March 2014, the recent 35% expansion of services to and from Catania and the breaking of the Alitalia monopoly on the important Linate - Fiumicino route.

Carolyn McCall, easyJet's Chief Executive, explained the airline's strategy:
"Today's announcement demonstrates our commitment to this key market. Over 13.5 million passengers flew with us to, from and within Italy last year and today's news means that we will be providing more Italians with our friendly service, low fares and the best network of flights across Europe.

"We are the second biggest airline at Fiumicino, carrying over 3 million passengers per year and these expansion plans ensure the maintenance of that position.

"With the other announcements about Italy we have made in recent weeks this means that we will continue to provide passengers with the best European network of any airline operating in Italy."

Frances Ouseley, easyJet's Country Director for Italy, gave more details on the expansion plans:
"easyJet will expand its capacity to and from Fiumicino by a third in 2014. We will launch a number of brand new services including Prague, Nantes, Menorca, and Rhodes.

"In addition, we will increase services to many of our existing routes such as five more weekly services on Rome Fiumicino-London Gatwick and Rome Fiumicino-Athens will become twice daily in the summer, while extra services will be added to popular destinations such as Crete (Heraklion), Palma and Mykonos.

"easyJet's base in Fiumicino was established in 2009 and has six aircraft. These expansion plans will see easyJet carry more than 4 million passengers a year to and from Italy's capital.

"easyJet aims to make travel easy and affordable for our passengers and in doing so we have built loyalty as well as market share in recent years.

"Everyone has heard of easyJet in Italy but what's more important is that when they fly with us they love the experience. As a result, 96% of our Italian customers say they would fly with us again and one in four Italians now say easyJet is their preferred airline."

Flights will go on sale in the near future and the new and additional services will roll out during Spring 2014.

easyJet is the largest airline at Milan Malpensa, Venice and Naples and the second largest at Rome Fiumicino and Olbia.

easyJet has expanded its capacity in Italy by 6% in the last year serving 17 Italian airports and providing 14 domestic and 133 routes across Europe to 20 countries. easyJet has 25 aircraft based in Italy.

easyJet employs around 900 pilots, cabin crew and other staff in Italy. All are employed on Italian terms and conditions.

Easyjet's Manchester to Moscow direct flights to be cut next summer

The airline launched the route on March 28 with the expectation of carrying around 60,000 passengers during the first year, with four flights every week. But from May 12 to September there will be just two.

Direct flights from Manchester Airport to Moscow will be halved next summer.

The airline launched the route on March 28 with the expectation of carrying around 60,000 passengers during the first year, with four flights every week. But from May 12 to September there will be just two.

It was heralded as critical to the strategy to see North West firms increase their presence in emerging markets and away from its current reliance on the EU.

An easyJet spokeswoman said: “easyJet currently offer four flights per week from Manchester to Moscow. This will reduce slightly during peak summer to offer additional flights to sun destinations such as Athens and Thessaloniki.

“We continually review our flying schedule to ensure we offer the right combination of routes to meet our customers’ needs and it is common to replace city breaks with sun destinations during peak summer.”

An autumn schedule has yet to be finalised.

A Manchester Airport spokesman said: “We’re disappointed to lose frequency on Moscow but pleased to see that the capacity will be used on increased flights to popular destinations such as Athens and Thessaloniki.

“We remain committed to supporting easyJet’s growth here at Manchester and it’s not unusual that a carrier will switch operations to meet the needs of the summer season, where passengers are looking for more sun orientated destinations for their main annual holiday.

“The Moscow route remains important for businesses based in the North West which are looking to serve new markets such as Russia and is helping to increase trade between the two regions.”

The route was launched with an advertising campaign to encourage Russians to visit the region.

Manchester’s twin city is St Petersburg and Manchester has a Russian social club, shop, restaurant and Orthodox church.

Manchester’s exports to Russia have grown by 27 per cent in the last two years.

Ryanair moves to operate from Glasgow's premium airport

LONDON, July 3 (Reuters) - Low cost airline Ryanair said it would switch to fly from Glasgow International airport, the Scottish city's premium airport, dropping a current route from a smaller airport, as it attempts to win more business customers.

Ryanair said on Thursday it would set up a new base at Glasgow International and increase routes and flights between Glasgow and London and Dublin in Ireland, as well as from Edinburgh to London.

The budget carrier had previously operated from Glasgow's Prestwick airport.

"Ryanair remains committed to its long standing base at Prestwick where the airline has a major maintenance facility and is currently in discussions with Glasgow Prestwick and the Scottish Government, its new owners, to explore growth opportunities to/from Prestwick," the company said in a statement.

✈ | LCCs | Low-Cost Carriers News and Discussion

This is something I have not ventured into before... I introduce to you this new thread, which I will dedicate to the myriad of low-cost carriers, known popularly in some countries as either:

- LCCs
- no-frills airlines
- budget airlines

These operate around the world under various names, from Ryanair to AirAsia to Southwest Airlines. Their strategy model include:

- Point-to-point service (instead of the traditional hub-and-spoke with full service carriers, FSCs)
- The earlier you book, the cheaper your fare
- Use of small, narrow-bodied aircraft (e.g. A320, B737) to minimize turnaround time and maximize profits (some carriers, like Air Canada Rouge, Cebu Pacific, Jetstar Airways, and Scoot, use wide-bodied aircraft [e.g. A330, B777, B787] as well to bring in even more passengers on board)
- Bare-bone cabin features, with items you can purchase in flight
- Operating out of smaller airports instead of the larger hubs (especially true in Europe)
- Typically, these don't join large airline alliances; instead, these airlines will establish multiple focus points in multiple countries to make aircraft deployment more efficient and continue their point-to-point service model to as many destinations as possible (prime examples: AirAsia and Ryanair)

I understand the many downsides of riding with LCCs, but, with their rock-bottom fares and frequent seat sales to various destinations, it is indeed a favorite among budget travelers.

You can discuss the following here:

- Your personal stories on board an LCC flight;
- Your photos and videos on board them;
- What aircraft they use and how they utilize them;
- The airport terminals they fly out from; and
- The future of LCCs in terms of connectivity and competition with FSCs

Anyone who has extensive knowledge of LCCs is definitely welcome to post here, as well as frequent flyers and those who know the industry well.

And here are some examples of LCCs: (more can be found here)

Note: * - indicates that it is a hybrid carrier (a mix of LCC and premium features are offered with the airline)

The Americas:
- Air Canada Rouge*
- Azul (Brazil)
- Frontier
- Interjet (Mexico)
- jetBlue*
- Southwest Airlines
- Spirit Airlines
- Virgin America*
- Volaris
- WestJet

Europe and Africa:
- Air Berlin*
- Easyjet
- Mango (South Africa)
- Monarch Airlines
- Norwegian Air Shuttle*
- Pegasus Airlines
- Ryanair
- Transavia.com
- Vueling
- Wizz Air

Middle East, Asia, and Oceania:
- AirAsia
- Cebu Pacific
- flyDubai
- IndiGo (India)
- Jetstar Airways*
- Jin Air
- Lion Air
- Nok Air (Thailand)
- Scoot*
- Tigerair

Happy posting!

Excelent thread Fieldsofdreams, you're missing one LCC in your list: Vivacolombia, the new Low Cost Airline of Colombia, it has like 2-3 years flying in national fligths, recently has started a new route between Bogota and Panamα City, in december starts Bogota and Quito and after that Bogota - Lima.

No problem! I indicated some in this case because I only wrote about the larger LCCs found throughout the world... yet you're more than welcome to add your airline to the list up for discussion. This thread is for all LCCs in operation today, btw... I'm looking at adding some historical airlines to it too.

I've combined the former (and now dead) AirAsia Group thread into this larger thread since it is indeed a group of LCCs operating out of Asia.
