New York - Pier 55 Park

A new urban park that rises above rotting piers along the west side of Manhattan has been proposed:

$130 Million 'Pier55' Park Looks Like Something Out of Avatar

Quote:
Billionaire media mogul Barry Diller and his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, are donating $130 million to build a futuristic-looking 2.7 acre park in the Hudson River. If this is the first you're hearing about this, you're not alone—after Diller was approached by the Hudson River Park Trust two and a half years ago about helping to replace the crumbling Pier 54, they planned the park basically in secret, with Diller's commitment rising from $35 million to $130 million as the project became increasingly ambitious. The end result—an amoeba-like undulating structure sitting on 300 concrete pylons, ranging from 70 feet to 15 feet—is from British designer Thomas Heatherwick (known for designing the Olympic caldron for the Summer Olympics in London in 2012). [Edit: Mathews Nielsen is serving as Landscape Architect.] It will feature gardens, lawns, and an 800-seat amphitheater...

With the Diller-Von Furstenberg Family Foundation contributing the bulk of the funding and an additional $39.5 million coming from the city, the state and the Hudson River Park Trust, the project only needs approval from the trust's full board, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the state Department of Environmental Conservation to move forward with construction in 2016. After its completion, Diller would sign a lease to run the park and cover its operating expenses for 20 years.

They should make a direct connection to the High Line Park for this.

Wow out of this World. Pilars look like they are organic.

Seems like a good Project Judging by the first picture of Brick City, it seems like the perfect; Escaping The RatRace for a moment spot.

‘Hollywood on the Hudson’ park project can move forward: judge

Quote:
A park project dubbed “Hollywood on the Hudson” is a big step closer to its premiere after a Manhattan judge tossed a lawsuit by an activist group that tried to delay the West 13th Street development over environmental and other concerns.

Media mogul Barry Diller and his fashion designer wife Diane von Furstenberg have committed tens of millions of dollars to rehab Pier 55 and bring events curated by Oscar-winning producer Scott Rudin to the site.
...
Construction is scheduled to start later this year. When it is completed, visitors to the park will be able to access the pier from two ramps off the Hudson River Greenway.

The 117,000-square-foot space will including grassy fields, paved walking areas and three performance spaces.

Over half of the events will be offered for free or at low cost.

I'm glad to see the renders and the first construction activities. This is such an interesting project, I love the amphitheater and the wild flowers.

Thats some fine design. I especially like the little open concert space they got.

For me though, its not enough to have a small park on the edge of the shore, while there is a gigantic metropolis with cars and noise 1km away..
