Opatija Croatia - Historic Resort Town (Pics)

These are pictures of Opatija, a well known historic resort town on Croatia’s coast, located just outside the port city of Rijeka.

Most of the Villas and Hotels were built towards the end of the 19th century.

The town of Opatija (Abbazia in Italian) means “The Abbey”. For decades Opatija was the playground of Europe’s royalty and wealthy, especially the Habsburgs. Hence showing that centuries ago Croatia was well known for tourism.

Today, virtually all of Opatija’s grand buildings exist and it continues to function as one of Croatia’s premier tourism destinations.

I like Opatija very much, but every time I see name of this promenade, I get angry. I don't think Franz Joseph deserves to have any memorial in Croatia.

I dont really have any bad opinions on it. My guess is they are just trying to keep Opatija feel traditional and visitors to feel kinda what it was like in past, big part of town and villas were built by Austrians.

I guess Croatia is one of the few unspoiled areas left in Europe.

Hi There,

I am glad you like the photos on my site http://www.photocroatia.com, but I would prefer that you point to my web site and not just post the photos, I have let it go for a while, but now it seems its a regular occurrence.

The only thing I get by you posting my photos here is that you use my bandwidth, my site gets no hits, no advertising clicks, no recognition no nothing.

I would appreciate in the future if you point people to my site by posting the easylink.

Thank you.

My appologies, since I was the culprit. I should have mentioned the site but I forgot to do this. I'm fan of your site and therefore in future I'll make reference to the excellent collection of images stored at your website.

If anyone is interested in a coll site containing pics of Croatia. I highly recommend .....

Nice pictures. they deserves the reputation of Opatija as a "higher class" resort. Btw, which resort began with touristic boom on Croatian Adriatics in the beginning of 20th century - Crikvenica, or Opatija?
