928-Foot Tower Planned On Riverfront Parcel

KAR Properties has submitted plans to the FAA to build a 928-foot tower on the Miami River, according to records obtained by TNM.

If approved, the tower would reach a height of 933 feet above sea level, making it taller than any other building that currently exists in Miami (although several towers are planned that would break the 1000-foot mark.)

A 605-foot condo project called Cima was once part of a MUSP approved for the site in 2004, known as the Riverfront Parcel. Two condo towers known as Ivy and Wind were built, but the rest of the land remains vacant.

I think it is given its location amid a nexus of other supertall proposals. But you never know with that rogue agency!

They are really something else. In the last decade, they said we could go as high as 1,000 feet there. Now they've come up with this one-engine emergency airspace rule which puts every proposed building in Miami at their whim.

It is frustrating! A developer proposes a very tall building, and then we have to wait around to see what the FAA will let us have. We've had lots of buildings that were proposed taller, but the FAA essentially said "Not on that lot!"

It's not like the building is going to jump and crash into the airplane!

They've decided they need more space for planes that are in trouble. I feel like saying "Aw, come on! You don't really need that much space!"

Sometimes I really wonder if NIMBY's lobby the FAA to ban tall buildings in a particular neighborhood. Since one of the runways of Miami International Airport points directly at Downtown, I can see the reasoning for their whining, as a plane that is flying too low could cause a problem. They usually create charts called flight cones to tell height limits around an airport, with safety factors built in for a plane with malfunctioning altitude censors or stupid pilots. The towers are 6-7 miles from the airport, which is very close. The difference of 100 feet is very small though. That problem will continue to exist until they relocate at least that diagonal runway, which likely will not happen for decades.

I really depends on how close their airport is to the city.
