ARN | Arlanda Airport and Airport City

Arlanda Airport today:

Control tower @ Arlanda airport by Binas., on Flickr

Facilities

Runways

Arlanda has three runways: Runway 1 (01L/19R), Runway 2 (08/26), Runway 3 (01R/19L). Runway 1 is 3,301 m (10,830 ft) long and can handle take-offs and landings of the heaviest aircraft in use today. Runways 2 and 3 are 2,500 m (8,202 ft) long. As indicated, runways 1 and 3 are parallel runways that can be operated independently of one another. Runways 1 and 3 are equipped with CAT III for instrument landings. The airport can handle simultaneous take offs and landings using runways 1 and 3 at the same time. Parallel takeoffs and landings can be performed in Instrument meteorological conditions, (IMC). Runway 3 (01R/19L) is reached from the main terminal area via taxiway bridges constructed to be able to handle the heaviest and largest airplanes in traffic. Since runway 3 (01R/19L) is located at a distance from the terminals a deicing area is placed close to the runway to avoid too long time between deicing and take off in winter conditions. Another deicing area is located in connection with the southern ramp area close to take off positions at runway 01L. There are high speed taxiway exits from all runways, except runway 08, to enable aircraft to exit the runways quickly after landing. This increases runway capacity during rush hours. Use of parallel taxiways around the terminal area separates arriving and departing traffic. Arlanda can handle all aircraft types in service including the Airbus A380.

Terminals

The airport has four terminals. Terminals 2 and 5 are used for international flights. Domestic flights are in Terminals 3 and 4. The new central building, Arlanda North, opened late 2003, connecting terminal 5 with the newly built Pier F. All international flights handled by SAS and its Star Alliance partners use the new central building. In the terminal areas and the shopping area "Sky City" there are restaurants, shopping facilities, bars etc. to cater to the needs for passengers and visitors to the airport. There are hotels both at the airport in connection with the terminals and in its surroundings. The hotel capacity at the airport was increased by the new Clarion Hotel Arlanda with 400 rooms which opened in November 2012. There are also conference facilities at the airport.

ARN | Arlanda Airport and Airport City (plans for the future)

Let's discuss the major development projects that will make the main aiport of Sweden and Stockholm even more attractive and competitive.

Arlanda by PezMico, on Flickr

This year Swedavia announced the expansion plans of Arlanda Airport (ARN) for the coming 30 years. The expansion project is split into two phases with the first stage of construction work starting in 2015. The expansion project includes:

2015-2021: The extension of Terminal 5 (T5) easterwords. The new G-pier will be designed specially to serve the very large planes.

2021-2043: Two new piers from Terminal 2 (T2). One pier will replace Termnial 3 while the regional aircrafts will be served in Termninal 4 (T4). A second pier will be built east of Terminal 2 (T2). This will be a massive expansion of the terminal.

Fully implemented, the development plan includes SEK 13 billion in capital spending. More information will be published later.

ARN | Arlanda Airport City

From Swedavia:

The new Airport City Stockholm

Airport City Stockholm is a development project managed jointly by Swedavia, the Municipality of Sigtuna and Arlandastad Holding. The site covers about 800 hectares. Together the three partners have set out a vision to lead the Airport City development.
The Stockholm region is growing, and so too is commerce. More and more businesses need new areas to set up operations in. At the same time, there is a desire to concentrate operations in well-developed corporate parks with good services and access.
Swedavia, the Municipality of Sigtuna and Arlandastad Holding have together set out a vision: create a modern airport city with a vibrant city centre and attractive workplaces, in a location that offers exceptional access to the region, Sweden and the world.
A joint strategy has also been devised for building Airport City, a clear indication of the three partners’ shared drive and a tool for quickly achieving this vision.

Perfect location with nearby access to the rest of the world

It is hard to beat the location of Airport City Stockholm: adjacent to the largest airport in Sweden, between Stockholm and Uppsala, the growing city offers nearby access to railways, roads, air travel and the rest of the world. Some 20,000 people already work here, 200 companies have set up operations at the airport and over 19 million travellers passed through the area in 2012.
The objective of the new development is to be sustainable, commercial, nearby, urban and environmentally sound, which makes Airport City Stockholm the only urban development project of its kind in the world.

Airport City districts

Airport City will consist of six districts, each with its own special purpose. The first office complex to be built in the city centre is SkyCity Office One.

1. SkyCity: the city centre, which will give people a sense that they are already in the Stockholm city centre
2. Park City: airport entrance, a green park linking the area with other parts of Airport City
3. DriveLAB Stockholm: knowledge cluster for developing the automotive industry of the future
4. Märsta Business Park: established corporate park with good services which is closely integrated with the town of Märsta.
5. Cargo City – Cargo and logistics at the airport: located adjacent to the airport with a focus on cargo and logistics.
6. Logistic Center – Rosersberg Logistik along Route E4: logistics hub with warehouses and extensive parking and transport areas.

ARN | Vision: Fairs and Congress Centre in Airport City

Arlandastad Holding suggested to construct a new fairs and congress center closer to the airport. The plan is still a subject for a discussion.

Ny mässa i Arlandastad
Sigtuna

Finally, another airport set has come online! Makes me want to see how this is developed, especially I have relatives and friends who live near Stockholm.

The extention work of Terminal 5 (T5) will start in spring next year. This will mark the start of a long and, hopefully, exciting phase of extention of whole the Airport City. It is realy nice to know that you have relations with Sweden and look forward to seeing this development.

Oh yes, I do. It is just one of those majestic places in the world where, despite its size, I can really feel safe and happy living in a city like Stockholm or Malmo because those are more compact and efficient than many American cities. Not to mention, there are nonstop flights between Stockholm and Oakland with Norwegian (on board the B787), and I am excited for the prospect of expanding T5, Arlanda's international terminal, to host more flights and passengers.

Arlanda may be the third clearance airport in the EU as the Swedish government has announced launching an investigation into making Arlanda Airport the first airport in continental Europe to offer US border clearance on-site, enabling travellers to avoid chaotic customs situations upon arrival in the US.

More information: Stockholm set to become US clearance airport

From ARN:

British Airways B767-300ER (reg. G-BNWZ)

As for ARN having a US Border Preclearance counter, it would be interesting to have it operating at T5 since Scandinavian and Norwegian Air Shuttle operate quite a number of flights to the US...
