MONTPELLIER | Projects & Construction

MONTPELLIER - FRANCE

Montpellier is a millennium old city, located in southern France.
Distant about 750 Km from Paris to the north and 300 Km from Barcelona to the south.
Due to its coastal position (City center is 10 km north of the mediterranean sea), the climate is mediterranean (Warm and dry summers, cool and wet winters, high sunshine...) similar of San Jose, California. It is also renown for its preserved environment and low pollution.
The city is a major technology hub, highly educated (3 universities and 4 "grandes Úcoles", totalizing 70.000 students) and is economically booming since the mid sixties. (IBM, Dell, Intel, Ubisoft among others are established in the city. Also, due to the first european medicine faculty created here during the 13th century, it is home of numerous biotech startups...). Montpellier is also a major cultural center and is home of the second french gay community after Paris.
For such reasons, Montpellier is one of the most attractive city in Europe and is gaining power years after years. In 1965 its population was about 160.000 inhabitants (230.000 for the metro area), it skyrocketed to 280.000 inhabitants today (610.000 for the metro area). Montpellier is the head of a conurbation, along the coast, grouping SŔte, Nţmes, Lunel, totalizing 1.100.000 inhabitants.
The metro area has a 25 billion € GDP (growing about 4.5 % a year during the 1999/2014 period). Montpellier built itself on the technopole model since the eighties and is home to several technologic clusters (Numeric, Medicine, Agronomy, earth and space sciences... and as a result is the fifth concentration of research and innovation in France after Paris, Toulouse, Lyon and Grenoble).
Montpellier was the 23rd french city in 1965, and is the 7th today... it recently appeared in the global cities rankings and is home of an international organization since 2013 (the global forum for innovation in agriculture).
Naturally, its urban landscape dramatically changed over the last decades and is going on...

Here is a view of the medieval city, called "ECUSSON" because of its heart shape.

This is a view of the western historical center, showing the arch of triumph (1665), the "PLACE ROYALE DU PEYROU" (sun king), the botanical garden (16th century, first in France), and the aqueduct that supplied the city in fresh water during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Also both St Pierre Cathedral and St Anne church (now a modern art center).

PIERRES VIVES Center (Archives and cultural center), located in the northwestern part of the city, between a pharmacology hub (Sanofi group research center) and a poor neighborhood built in the sixties and seventies (La MOSSON). It was completed in 2013 and was designed by ZAHA HADID.

The new CITY HALL, built in the new part of the city (southeastern), PORT MARIANNE, aiming to become the center of the whole urban region (more than 2 millions inhabitants). It was completed in 2012 and was designed by JEAN NOUVEL. It will be surrounded by highrises in the next decade.

The central train station : Montpellier St Roch. Works just finished and this new design is from Jean marie Dutilheul. It can handle regional trains and high speed trains on 7 tracks, destinations include Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Toulouse, Bordeaux, GenŔve, Brussels, Barcelona and Madrid.

The international airport "MONTPELLIER MEDITERRANEE", 9th french airport by passengers (1,4 million in 2013). Its amenities are highly qualitative and investments are constant. It serves Paris (both CDG and Orly), Lyon, Lille, Nantes, Strasbourg, Brussels, Amsterdam, London (Gatwick and Luton), Frankfurt (Hahn and Rhein/Main), Munich, Copenhagen, Dublin, Manchester, Rome, Algiers, Marrakech and Casablanca.

Montpellier is served by two major motorways, A9 (To Barcelona, Marseille, Lyon and Toulouse) and A75 (To Clermont-Ferrand, OrlÚans and Paris). Traffic is so heavy around the city that de A9 is currently being doubled to a 12 lanes motorway, in order to provide a southern ring and keeping the transit safe and fluid on a major european corridor (Barcelona/Frankfurt, Barcelona/Milan and Barcelona/Rome).
