Lets see how long this lasts since Kenya's tourism numbers are down and airlines are losing money instead of making money. Should have gone FRA-ADD to connect to star alliance hubs.

Tourist numbers are down but business is actually doing well. The economy is actually performing well. Figures look good and Kenya has now become a frontier economy.

And also Nairobi is considered the African alternative to Johannesburg for companies that want to set up in Africa. So there is a huge multinational presence in Nairobi.

Nairobi also already handles about the same number of airline passengers as Addis even though Nairobi has no direct US flights. Approval is expected around September. Delta and KQ had been pushing for approval for years.

Nairobi is also the strongest business hub in the region. Its actually nicer transitioning into industries that will actually make average Kenyans more money.

So it makes sense that they chose Nairobi. Imma be optimistic and say they will last longer than most people think.

Addis doesn't have many multinationals as the economy is still very closed to foreign investors.

KQ lounges at JKIA rated the second best Lounges globally

The African Business Fortune | 4th April 2016

Quote:
Kenya Airways Lounges at JKIA were rated the second best after Taipei, in Taiwan by SkyTeam passengers in a recent survey by Air transport News.

The state of the art Lounges in JKIA have consistently won international awards over the past two years since its opening towards the end of 2014.

Simba Lounge and Pride Lounge are the two exclusive lounges used by Premier World passengers transiting through Kenya Airways’ JKIA hub.

The lounges are also used by Sky Priority passengers from the airline’s SkyTeam partners who rated them amongst the top in the world.

Pride Lounge, which is set on 991 square metres, features a circular layout overlooking the airside. It will provide premium hospitality complete with a Cigar Room, Piped music (sectional), Washrooms and showers, a Kiddy Zone and a Dining/ Working area.

Simba Lounge spans 360 square metres. Features of the rectangular lounge are: Smoking Zone, Family Lounge, Business Experience Centre, Piped music (entire facility), Washrooms and showers, Noise Proof Quiet Zone for sleeping and a Dining/Working area.

KQ CEO Mbuvi Ngunze said that most of the recognition is not just a vote about product facilities offered, but also customers perceptions about JKIA’s service standards.

The SkyTeam Alliance was also awarded ‘Airline Alliance of the Year’ for the third year in a row in the latest Air Transport News Awards that took place in Salzburg, Austria, on Saturday, March 26th.

Lufthansa deploys larger planes on Nairobi route

Daily Nation | 14th June 2016

Lufthansa A340-300 by BriYYZ, on Flickr

Quote:
German airline Lufthansa is set to deploy larger aircraft and increase its frequencies on the Nairobi-Frankfurt route on what it linked to ‘huge potential'.

The airline says it will deploy the wide-bodied Airbus A340-300 between Frankfurt and Nairobi four times a week beginning September this year, up from the current three weekly flights.

Lufthansa, one of Europe’s biggest airlines, resumed direct passenger flights to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport from late October 2015 after an 18-year absence from the Kenyan capital.

According to International Air Transport Association (IATA), demand is holding up in Africa despite the underperformance of Nigeria and South Africa. East Africa is delivering above average economic growth when the rest of the world is struggling to grow.

On Monday, Lufthansa general manager for Kenya and Ethiopia Tobias Ernst said demand has been rising in the nearly nine month period since resumption, prompting the expansion plans.
Lufthansa is here to stay.....
