There's no official definition for those terms, a "Großraum Frankfurt" doesn't exist, too.
There's only the "Planungsverband" which is roughly comparable to the urban area (yet some rural parts in the north should be left out, but the population there only sums up for not more than 200000) and the "Metropolregion Rhein-Main". But there is no official definition which area is covered by the latter. The IHK map previously shown is the only known source of an official organisation. So the numbers for Rhein-Main differ from source to source. Nevertheless, the population should be anywhere between 4.5 million (would be a very strict definition upon population density without any consideration of commuters) and the IHK's 5.8 million.
So I think saying Frankfurt's metro area has around 5 million inhabitants was a good compromise.

But back to topic now... I think it was Frankfurt's U-Bahn network

The airport station is a lot crapier than I thought it'd be. It's such a big important airport, and Frankfurt is such a rich city. I thought they'd have a really nice station serving Fraport.

That's for S-Bahn only - for long-distance trains station looked like this:

Honestly the long distance train station at the airport doesn't look that nice in full daylight. It's not bad, just not as nice as when it's dark(er) outside:

Frankfurt Hbf has two levels, S-Bahn in tunnel and all other trains on ground level. (Or perhaps it's three levels, there is also an U-bahn station there).

The main station looks like most large terminus stations of that age. Daylight:

In the "blue hour":

Behind the windows you can see some of the skyscrapers, "Mainhattan":

At the end of the tracks there is a long large walkway. Looking north:

Looking south:

A few minutes before midnight there aren't that many trains to show on the large displays:

A rather strange "watch tower" café thingie:

The main station has passenger platforms and service plattforms on each site of the tracks:

Escalators to the S-Bahn part of the station:

More stairs around the corner:

The S-bahn station in tunnel looks like most S-bahn stations in tunnels

(All pictures in this post taken by me - summer 2011)

P.S. track map for the U-bahn system can be found here:
http://www.gleisplanweb.eu/Map.php?Map=Frankfurt
The text is in german but it should be usable for those who don't understand german. Hint: gleisplan = track map, netzplan = network map, "Zustand vor der Stilllegung" = state before cease traffic.

Hauptwache is interesting because it has an island platform with S-Bahn tracks around it, and next to those tracks you find U-Bahn tracks with side platforms.

One of the U-Bahn platform seen from the S-Bahn platform. Notice the excelent "Kurzzug" sign, clearly stating which part of the platform short trains will stop at:

There were obviously some kind of ceiling works going on when I took this picture. S-bahn platform, and an U-Bahn platform to the right:

An U-Bahn train and it's platform seen from the S-Bahn platform:

U-Bahn platform:

The S-Bahn trains and it's platforms are far longer than the U-Bahn trains and platform, thus you see a bit of "non platform" area on the U-Bahn tracks when you stand on the S-Bahn platform. By some reason there is a wall-mounted ladder next to the end of one of the U-Bahn platforms:

The station has a huge mezzanine with a lot of exits/entrances and quite a few stairs, escalators and elevators to the platforms:

Escalators to the S-Bahn platform:

Escalator and stairs to the S-Bahn platform:

As you can see, there are quite a few shops on the mezzanine level. To the left is one of the exist/entrances:

Yes, it's huge:

The U-Bahn and S-Bahn has separate real time displays, at different places. U-Bahn here:

Entrance to U-Bahn platforms:

One of the entrances seen from the outside, with stairs and escalators:

Old and new mixed together side by side:

Here is another entrace:

... with stairs from several places:

Even this entrance is huge! It's quite disturbing and I'm kind of ashamed of that there are homeless people in such a rich part of the world as the EU/Schengen area.
