NEW DELHI | DDA High-Rise | +400m | +1312ft | 120 fl | Pro

Delhi Dreams Big, to Stand Tall With 120-Floor High-Rise

Delhi is all set to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with its glitzier neighbors – Gurgaon and Noida. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is planning a skyscraper that might go up to 120 floors and become the tallest building in north India.

The commercial tower would be part of a cyber hub that the DDA is going to create in east Delhi’s Karkardooma area. The cyber hub, which would house the skyscraper and other residential towers, would be spread over 75 acres (30 hectares). The DDA believes it will be a signature destination of East Delhi. The plan was recently approved in a meeting chaired by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.

“Delhi is traditionally a low-rise city with few tall buildings. Gurgaon and Noida have many high-rise buildings. With the tower, we want to make a statement,” said a senior DDA official.

Although, the plan has been approved for an 80-story tower with an approximate height of 300 meters, DDA officials want it to be even higher at 120 stories. The tallest building in Delhi at present is the MCD Civic Centre with 28 floors. It is 112 meters tall.

Surrounded by shorter residential towers, the signature tower would be completely commercial, with offices, retail outlets, and hotels. “The tower would have a strong pile foundation and wouldn’t be affected by seismic activity. It would be a completely government-funded project. We are likely to sign a memorandum of understanding with the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) for its construction,” the official said.

Construction of the tower is expected to begin within two years after all necessary approvals are in place.

A huge dream for Delhi, yes. But also a huge challenge. I wish Delhi luck in rising to the challenge - both figuratively and literally.

Usually skyscrapers are not allowed in Delhi as it's a historical city. Also the previous govt was totally against skyscrapers in Delhi but this new govt is pushing for vertical developments it seems.

A city as populous as Delhi with no skyscrapers is a multi-faceted disaster waiting to happen. Designate a (or several) historical area(s), and build up around it. In my opinion, and I'm sure the opinion of many others, that's how the most interesting cityscapes are made.

Contractor Chosen for East Delhi Hub Tower

State-owned National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) signed an agreement on Feb. 27 with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to construct a 30-hectare megaproject that will also house the tallest tower in the capital.

In a filing to the BSE, NBCC said it has "...signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DDA for development of 'East Delhi Hub' at Karkardooma. The East Delhi Hub mega project will be developed on 30 hectares of land."

This would be the first project based on Transit Oriented Development (TOD) norms and Smart City features, it added.

"The project will be self-sustainable, comprising of tallest tower of Delhi, including residential, commercial, recreational and social infrastructures, among others," NBCC said.

NBCC will be paid a PMC (project management consultancy) and marketing fee.

"After getting statutory approvals, the project shall be completed in a period of approximately three years," the filing said.

NBCC will be working on in three main segments - Project Management Consultancy (PMC), Real Estate Development and EPC Contracting.

Previous reports indicated that the East Delhi Hub skyscraper that might go up to 120 floors and become the tallest building in north India.

The East Delhi Hub to be developed by the Delhi Development Authority and constructed by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) in Karkardooma will give Delhi its many firsts: the tallest tower, skywalk, helipad and the largest promenade.

The DDA and the NBCC on Wednesday unveiled the model of the pilot project at Karkardooma, which comprises an iconic tower around 100 storey high and 120 other towers and a self-sustainable system to meet local needs.

DDA Vice-Chairman Balvinder Kumar said, “Today, this might look fancy and imaginative to many, but we will give it to Delhi. This hub will give a new direction to Delhi’s development.”

NBCC CMD Anoop Mittal said he would like to see the project completed in three years, besides a six-month preparatory process with the latest construction strategies and also assistance from IIT Roorkee.

The hub would come up on a 30 hectare-DDA land next to two Metro stations, a regional railway station, Anand Vihar railway station, Anand Vihar ISBT, DTC bus terminal, and residential colonies such as Anand Vihar.

It will provide 4,800 new houses of one room, one BHK, 2BHK category out of which 500 houses will be exclusively for senior citizens.

The project is part of the Transit-Oriented Development aiming at reduced need to travel and meeting daily needs locally. Similar projects will follow in Mayur Vihar and Dwarka.

One of the high points of the project is the safety feature for women and children with all the buildings proposed to be on the edge of the street and no dead corners.

As per the MoU signed between the DDA and the NBCC, the latter will manage the project, while a joint team of both the parties will monitor the progress.

The NBCC in consultation with the DDA will finalise the disposal methodology and rates, however, the DDA would retain the authority for pricing and disposal of property.

Mixed use tower

The tower shall have restaurants, shopping facilities, offices, hotel and service apartments. At the top of the iconic tower, there will be several rooftop revolving discotheques and cafes, as well as a helipad for emergency and medical services,” DDA officials said.''

What a weird design but also interesting.
I can imagine that this huge "balcony" at the top would be not easy to realise.
But i think design is not final, and with 120 floors it will be 500m+ for sure.

The rendering is not very pretty, but it might look better in real life. Or the design might change. Anyway, it won't affect me in any way, so I have no reason to complain.

But to joke about it, on the other hand...

"What should we do with the top of the tower?"
"Come on, you're an architect, you can come up with something."
"Well, I have four options: A helipad, a rooftop viewing deck, a spire, and a sort of funky-hole-thing like the one on SWFC, only circular. What do you say?"
"Yes"
"What do you mean 'yes'?"
"All of them. Together. It will look splendid. Also, I want a couple of trees in the facade. Cut out the corners there and there."

Most probably the design is just concept because they are still debating whether to build a 80 floor, 100 floor or 120 floor tower.

That's such an easy decision to make, 120 floors is the obvious answer
