THE BIG AUSTRIA THREAD

Yeah, I know that the thread title is stolen but imitation is a form of appretiation.

I'll start by posting pictures of things you might get to see when travelling in Vienna and surroundings.
PART 1 VIENNA

The whole Vienna transit map (without trams):

The metro system:

Metro pictures: (The coloured lines, operated by Wiener Linien=Viennese transport company)
Two lines (U4, U6) were built following the end-of-19th-century light city rail:

The main railway stations, all of them are both international and regional stations:
Vienna never had a central station as it was the end of most journeys in this area of Europe.
The western trainstation:

If you follow the western line outbound you'll reach this lovely little station: Penzing. I only post it because I live here.

The next station on the line is a smaller int'l station but very important for commuters as the U4 line ends here.
Hütteldorf, next to the stadium of Austria's current football champions, Rapid Vienna (my team):

The southern train station:
About to be entirely rebuilt and to become Vienna's first central station.

The so-called station "Wien-Mitte", Vienna center, which is nowhere near the real center:

The northern train station:

Vienna Airport station:

Local trains, including S-Bahn and Regional trainsthe grey lines), operated by Austrian Federal railways. (ÖBB)

The old S-Bahn trains, being phased out as we speak: (4020)

The new ones: (4024):
They seem to be quite popular all over Europe and I like them as well, always a good ride.

Arriving in my home station.

Regional trains that link Vienna and the surrounding towns:

Trams: just like the metro they are operated by Wiener Linien.
There is an amazing network of trams in Vienna and they go pretty much everywhere:

Generally we can split them in three groups:
E1, the oldest (and most widespread) generation, even though they vary in details:

(I can remember this rainbow, I've been there at the same time.)

The less successful E2 version:

The most recent version, the ULF tram (ultra low floor):

Last, but not least, there is a private company that has ticketing agreements with Wiener linien and other companies in Greater Vienna that has one tram/rail line that links the center of Vienna and the town of Baden. On this route it is operated like a tram, a metro and a typical light rail as known from German cities:
The Badner Bahn by the Wiener Lokalbahnen:

I hope you enjoyed this introduction into the life of a Viennese transport geek. I'll make sure to keep you updated.

Great compilation.

When I was living there, near my place I could take the U-bahn, strassenbahn or the bus to virtually everywere in the city. One of the nightline buses stopped right in front of my home too.

Great to see that U3 is extended till the Simmering. Back then it use to go till Erdberg.

BTW I don't remember to have ever ridden in the ULF. They were serving routes far from where I lived or places I visited.

Thanks for the awesome pictures.

And guys, don't let some rather old looking trains fool you. Austria's transportation system is amazing -- extensive, punctual, clean and very transparent. Something that newly-wealthy countries' systems like those of Spain and Portugal lack. Instead of building a couple of high-speed tracks and running different hype trains on them, Austria - like other Western European nations - focuses on improving the infrastructure in all parts of the country and making it transparent.

The ULFs were recently implemented on the 49 line and in general they are used on routes that link the outer districts with the center and you can find them on routes to cemetaries and other places where elderly people go regularly.

I like the whole city of Innsbruck (the town itself is beautifull, and the mointains around are sooo cute) and its wonderful transport system. there are buses, trolleys and trams in some parts of the town, crossing at the same point. it's interesting how they cross over ones head without any problems
there is also one of the most interesting things in matter of trams: the forest-trams, climbing the hills in tunnels, on brigdes. i took that 'Wald-Tram' once, that was very funny and intersting thing!

the new Vienna metro trains look like boxes, i'm not their fan either
the older are pretty cool,
the great thing abvout them is, that the driver approaching the station turns out the wide light on the front of the train so it looks like the big dragon shuted the mouth up while being in the tunnel it shows the teeths (it's just my imagination) ) u have to look it when waiting for the train.

Last week in Gmuden, tram shuttle launched between Seebahnhof and Klosterplatz. This is part of StadtRegioBahn project, aiming to connect existing tram network (in red) with Traunseebahn local railway (in green). Map from urbanrail.net:

More on opening, taken from here:

StadtRegioBahn is planned for completion in 2016/17. Also planned to buy these Vossloh V3 trams:

Great project. This is effectively a light-rail project, isn't it? For a city of about 13000 inhabitants with some more people in the connected neighouring communities this is quite special, isn't it?
