"Jugendstil", an expression of Art Nouveau, is another architectural style mostly tied to Germany, with origins in the southern parts of the country and Vienna. Here are some of the better, although randomly chosen, examples from Hannover:

Here´s an example of how the city has changes for the worse, despite heroic attempts at reconstruction, which - unfortunately - is always an issue of costs and functionality:

The town hall of the formerly independent city of "Linden" before the war:

The center of the city is the part of the city which suffered the most lasting architectural loss:

Among the well preserved parts of the city center is the old, main market square (with the church and old city hall) and some of its immediate surroundings. For me personally, this small area captures the soul of Hannover the best.

Although I allready posted photos of some of these building, here follows a more systematic overview of the brick-laden urban architecture in the area:

First another pic of the altes Rathaus and Marktkirche

The "Georg von Cölln Haus".

Not the old city hall, as mistakenly informed in the source link, but one of the houses surrounding the old market incorporating some aesthetic elements of the old city hall.

Finally, a historical photo.

LOST SKYLINE-ELEMENTS

Hannover doesn´t have much of a skyline by modern terms, but the fact is, it don´t even have the "spire- & dome-skyline" it used to have. Some spires and cupolas have been permanently, or so it seems, lost:

The dome of the state museum was destroyed in aerial attacks and never rebuild.

Photo found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...ed=0CFUQrQMwEQ

This is how it looks today:

Photo found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...ed=0CCUQrQMwAQ

The Synagoge of Hannover (Bergstraße) was terminated by nazi-rage allready before the war, would be a great rebuilding project, symbolically as well as for the city of Hannover.

Aerial view of the burning synygogue:

Photo found at: https://sites.google.com/site/archit...werke/synagoge

The Garnison church, survived the war but was one of more valuable, historical buildings demolished at a time (50s and 60s) where people didn´t seem to realize the value of heritage.

The Leineinsel (Leine island) was an island in the river Leine which was removed after the war due to new city planning. It gave Hannover something special it has since lost, an aesthetic similar to some areas in cities like Nürnberg (Nuremberg) or Strasbourg. Some decisions from back then should be criminally charged, but I guess they were all too shell shocked to know any better at the time.

This old city map shows the Leineinsel.

Photo found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...ed=0CEwQrQMwDg

This contemporary map shows how it no longer exist, its building mass being replaced by a main road.

Detail of map found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...ed=0CCoQrQMwAQ

This is the view from atop the city hall before the war. Only a very small road parts the river from the buildings on its left bank.

This is the same view presently. A major road with many lanes has pushed the adjacent city back with 50 meters or more.

Some want to recreate the Leineinsel, but build modern architecture on it.

In my opinion, that would not only be a vasted potential, it would also be an absolute hinderance to better alternatives for 50 years or more to come.

If anything, there should be a historically faithful reconstruction. It would raise Hannovers standard, but the city itself must know that.

Poorer cities has made it, however, like Dresden.

In the map below, I show what I believe would restore the "old-town" of Hannover to most of its former glory.

I´ve devided possible projects into blue "leading priority" and green "following priority". The projects indicated in blue have leading priority because they probably constitute more "potent" contributions to transform aesthetic of the "old-town".

If everything indicated got build, it would be a huge project. Even everything marked blue would be a major city redvelopment project, maybe comparable to the rebuilding of Frankfurt old-town.

Adapted detail of map found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...ed=0CCoQrQMwAQ

I will try, over the next months, to make individual posts explaining each potential project mentioned with red text on the above map.

Excellent summary and information! Thanks for the effort! What percent likelihood do you think there is that the projects as outlined will be realized?

Thanks alot for the compliment.

The question is difficult for me to answer. I am an amateur learning the things I post as I do research for those posts. I know little more.

I would also like to know how likely it is that some of those projects get realized, but someone from Hannover should answer it. I´m in Germany because of marriage (born norwegian).

I have a bit "Schiss" that some developer get to dig out the Leineinsel, but put modern architecture on it. There have been proposals, but hopefully they will stall permanently.

There have been attempts to fund a rebuilding of the "Flusswasserkunst", which have also stalled, for the time being.

When it comes to the Leineinsel, the trafic problem must be solved before construction can start (maybe with a tunnel?). That hurdle might prohibit that some shortsighted or profit oriented construction project gets the green light in the middle of the historic old-town.

THE OLD MARKET HALL AND NEXT BUILDING

The market hall of Hannover old-town has been "rebuild" in the same spot, as a functional equivelant of the old, but as an architectural joke.

My suggestion is the exact opposite. Rebuild the old market hall architecturally faithfully (exteriorally), but with new functions - maybe as a "mini-mall". The structure could allow 3 or more stores above ground plus maybe several beneath (if the subway system allows it).

If technically feasible, potential underground stores could be given direct access to the local subway station. This would facilitate "Umsatz" and have been done in a similar way many other places.

The old, original market hall:

Photo found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...ed=0CCIQrQMwAA

This map shows the geographical location of the market hall within the old-town (orange circle).

A visualization of how a rebuild, old market hall could look.

From movie by "Alex Verzhbytskyy", found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...ed=0CCAQrQMwAA

This old picture shows the market hall and some of the neighboring architecture. In my opinion, at least the house encircled in red should also be rebuild, because it lays in the Karmarschstraße (a main street of the city center), a displeasing building currently stands on the same spot (see two pics above) and it is the direct neighbour of both the market hall and the old town hall (aesthetically important location).

Adaption of photo found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...ed=0CDUQrQMwBw

Here you can see the old town hall, the Marktkirche (church), the corner of the market hall (left) and the corner of Karmarschstraße 49 (right) within one and the same photo. Unfortunately, I couldn´t find any better photo of the old house in Karmarschstraße 49.

Adapted version of photo from "Photochrom Prints Collection", found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...ed=0CCAQrQMwAA

Here, its corner appears once more, taken from down the road crossing Karmarschstraße. The photo shows how much old architecture the area actually had before the war.

Detail of photo by Udo Weger, found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...ed=0CDgQrQMwCA

Most of the lost architecture on the eastside of the market hall (like in the above picture) are unlikely to get rebuild. If for no other reason, then because alternative plans are already proposed. This is a plan of the proposed changes to the area. Even a proposal for Karmarschstraße 49 is included, but til yet, only some of other of the visualized projects are likely to get the green light.

Adaption of visualization by "Büro Drecker", found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...d=0CPEBEK0DMEM

Seems like the modernist/communist disease spreads more broadly than ebola. Tragic and pathetic that so many architects and city planners want their once-glorious cities to look more like american suburban shopping malls than the historic and unique jewels they used to be...and could be again.

ENCLOSING THE MARKET AREA

I mentioned before that I find the small area surrounding the old town hall and the market church to be the area capturing the soul of old Hannover the best.

Even here, however, there are room for considerable improvements. Specifically, there are rotten teeth in the tooth-row.

The two city squares of the old city hall and the market church are marked orange on the below map. I have next framed that core area with a perimeter (also orange) to the north and east. The perimeter envelopes the building mass visible from that core market area, mostly "cheaper" looking, post-war architecture.

Adapted detail of map found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...ed=0CCoQrQMwAQ

I would suggest all buildings within the drawn perimeter to be rebuild as of 1938. If the market area could be "closed in" with an authentic historical frame like that, it would be a major improvement to the experience of the area.

This is the old market area as shown from its best side / most favourable perspective.

Photo by Marcus Prell, found at: http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...CHsQrQMwJzjIAQ

This is also a great shot, but the "background architecture" left of the church is mostly post war.

Photo by Dieter Wolter, found at http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=h...ed=0CDUQrQMwBw

This is the building mass marked green south of the core market area on the above map....as it looked before the war.

....and this is its post-war replacement.

This is the pre-war view from the market place across the Schmiedstraße (Smith-street, literary). The north side of the Schmiedstraße is the green area stretching paralell with the orange perimeter on the map, directly north of the core market area.

This is the view across to the Schmiedstraße presently, but from the other side of the church.

This is the backside of the old city hall as viewed from the market place. Post-war architecture on its left side destroys the full-blood experience of the historical architecture otherwise predominating the area.

.....and from the other side, with the front entrance. Post-war architecture on the right this time, with the same disturbing effect.

Sources to be completed.

ELH, are you working with the city design and planning departments? Your ideas and insights should be exposed to those in decision-making positions.
